About the Item
Anna Sobkowiak is a painter and 2D animator living and working in Poznan, Poland. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under the International Student Exchange Scholarship. She has exhibited in Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and the UK, for instance, in Starter Gallery and Leto Gallery. After studies she was associated with Poznan Nowa Gallery and was a laureate of the ‘Salted Candy 2010’ competition. Nowdays she also participates in online international art exhibitions, such as ‘Together/Somewhere’ organised by Visionary Projects and Art City Works. Since 2022 she has been a member of London Paint Club.
Her incessant inspiration are great works of David Hockney, Edward Hopper and Claude Monet. What she finds mesmerizing in their works are the afirmation of life (Hockey), the intensity of the moment (Hopper) and vibrant colours (Monet). Her pictures depict mainly young people in highly ambiguous spaces and situations, which creates an atmosphere full of engagement, inner strength and passion.
The painting depicts a young person observing the world outside the housing estate through an almost curtained window. It's evening, it's getting dark. The viewer cannot see the girl's face or emotions, just the back of her neatly tied hair. The way the curtains are painted expresses a certain unease of the moment as if something bad has happened or is about to happen any moment. Perhaps the girl does not leave the house, she may be grounded or is just curious about what is outside, but is afraid to go out. She might represent our tentativeness and reluctance to face the real world as well as our innermost need to keep up appearances.
