About the Item

Signed post impressionist figures in cityscape oil on canvas circa 1960 by French painter Antoine Blanchard. The work depicts a bustling scene at Place de la Republique - a square in Paris, France in autumn. The leaves on the trees are turning orange and brown and falling onto the wet ground below. The statue of Marianne can be on top of the Monument a la Republique. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 21"x26" Unframed: 13"x18" Provenance: Private UK collection A certificate of authenticity is available upon request from Rehs Galleries at a charge of USD $350.00 Antoine Blanchard trained at the École de Beaux-Arts in Rennes for three years. Then from 1932 attended the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris for four years. He painted exclusively Parisian street scenes in which the view is of an idyllic Paris in any season, but always in 1900. Blanchard received his initial artistic training at the Beaux-Arts in Rennes, Brittany. He then moved to Paris in 1932 where he joined the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He won the Prix de Rome. Like Edouard Cortes (1882–1969) and Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941), Antoine Blanchard essentially painted Paris and the Parisians in bygone days, often from vintage postcards. The artist began painting his Paris street scenes in the late 1950s. And like Cortès, often painted the same Paris landmark many times, in different weather conditions or various seasons. The most recurrent topics were views of the capital city on cloudy or rainy days. Showing streets busy with pedestrians in a rush to go home, and bright storefronts reflecting on wet streets. Many of the French Quarter art galleries of New Orleans handle Antoine Blanchard paintings and prints since this American City has a strong French history. His art is popular in international art auctions and there are many copies. Authentication of an original Blanchard/Masson painting is necessary and the authentic signature carries a secret known by art experts. On August 10th 1988, Antoine Blanchard died aged 78.

  • Printemps
    By Charles Levier
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...
