Robert Antoine Pinchon
Duclair - La Seine - Post Impressionist Oil, River Landscape by Robert Pinchon

c.1920

About the Item

Fauvist signed oil on canvas riverscape circa 1920 by French post impressionist painter Robert Antoine Pinchon. The work depicts a view of the River Seine as it runs through Duclair in the Normandy region of northern France. To the foreground a horse and cart is travelling along a road that rund alongside the river. The banks are filled with trees and shrubs in autumnal colours of red, brown and orange. A steam boat sails on the water and light breaks through the clouds above. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 25"x34.5" Unframed: 18"x27.5" Provenance: This work will be included in the catalogue raisonné of the artist in preparation by Mr. Alain Letailleur and is cited as reference no. 1175 Pinchon was a student of Zacharie at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, and also attended Joseph Delattre's Académie Libre there. Fréchon and Lebourg were his teachers and also his friends. He lived and worked in Rouen, where he founded the Société Normande de Peinture Normande with Dumont, Hodé and Tirvert. Along with Dumont and Guilbert, Pinchon is one of the Rouen artists who understood Monet's teachings best. Monet himself noticed Pinchon's 'eye' when he met him for the first time. On a technical level, he used pure colours, just as they came out of the tube. His poetical art perfectly rendered not only the misty lights of the port of Rouen, but also scenes of daily life, whether of a young woman sitting in a garden or children playing with a ball. Noteworthy are: Embankment in Rouen; Rouen in the Snow; Banks of the Seine; Suspension Bridge at Elbeuf. In Paris he showed at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded an honourable mention in 1930 and became a member the same year. In 2003 he featured in an exhibition, Around Impressionism: Nineteen Painters from the School of Normandy ( Autour de l'Impressionnisme: dix-neuf peintres de l'école normande) at the Maison des Arts in Antony.

  • Printemps
    By Charles Levier
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...
