About the Item

Famous Edinburgh scene with the foggy Castle on the Mount from the North Bridge, and a bustling city scene below. Impressionist style, dating to mid 1920s/1930s, presenting a glimpse of Scottish society of the time. Dunlop Cord Balloon on the motorcar, cloches, fedoras and beanie hats on figures; a boy is wearing his tartan kilt and a man carries his golf clubs. Ramsay Gardens and Edinburgh landmarks are pictured on the hill, with the foggy impressionist outline of the ancient Edinburgh Castle, home of Mary Queen of Scots, rising above in shades of pale blue. Above the motorcar is the top of the National Galleries building and Stockbridge is seen in impressionist pastels in the distance. This oil painting is by Charles Eddowes Turner (1883-1965), painted on canvas with a contemporary silver grey frame. Edinburgh is presented as a thriving cityscape, with figures walking along the bridge, a flower vendor and period motorcar, creating an image that is alive and in moment. Looking from the Bridge, we see the old medieval City, and also the neoclassical structure typical of New Town. So much history is present in a wholly distinctive early/mid 20th century view. Turner is known for his detailed paintings of maritime ships and aircraft, but in this painting he brings his detail to figures in a renowned cityscape, with great success. Being one of his most successful city scenes, this work by Turner has broad appeal, with a higher than average valuation for his work. Provenance to prior ownership in Chicago. This canvas is 20" by 30", setting in a contemporary frame for a total measurement of 28” to 38”. There appears to be some secondary strengthening to the sky and the Castle outline, and a couple areas look thin, though that also appears to be intentional as in the area of brown/gray background with light spots of white flowers in the vendors box. Overall delightful, colorful and expressive view of Edinburgh a hundred years ago!

View of Dunoon on the Clyde
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Scottish artist Robert Carrick (1829-1904) is renowned for his landscape and figurative paintings in oil and watercolor. This painting features detailed drawings of figures in the foreground with wagon, and the town and scenery in the background, painted over in watercolor in rich raw umber and red-brown tones in the foreground and blue green tones in the background. Carrick showed promise at a young age, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy age 16. He was a member of the Royal Institute. This two-toned watercolor work has detailed figures, wagon with hay in the forefront above a view of Dunoon town near Glasgow as it was long ago. Signed by the artist, lower left with an inscription that reads: 'View of Dunoon, Argyllshire drawn by Robert Carrick, Glasgow, for David Allan'. Verso includes a copy of the same inscription. Saltire Gallerie replaced the cracked and dirty plain glass with art glass and added an acid-free paper behind the work. While doing this work we found an art giclee, included with the painting. Presented in a patterned wooden frame with art glass. Dunoon was a thriving town on the river at the time of this work, and later became part of Glasgow. The view from above the town is a popular one, as Saltire Gallerie has another view of Dunoon from above by Scottish artist Patrick Downie...
