About the Item
Figurative illustration of people arriving at a church by Charles Kinghan (American, 1895-1984). The church is rendered with exquisite detail, typical of Kinghan's style. People are walking towards an ornate church, dressed in heavy winter clothes. A few people are arriving by a horse-drawn sleigh. The winter scene contrasts nicely with the vivid blue sky. A slightly modified version of this illustration was used as the cover illustration (see image) for the February 23, 1952 edition of Collier's magazine (magazine is not included).
Signed "Kinghan" in the lower right corner.

Charles Ross Kinghan (American, 1895-1984) was born in Anthony, KS on January 18, 1895. A teacher, he moved to Wichita as a teenager and did sign painting for the Western Sign Works. He studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1916, the American Academy of Art in Chicago, the Audubon School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a pupil of Carl Scheffler, J. Wellington Reynolds, and H.A. Oberteuffer.
He taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He was an illustrator for McCalls, Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, and many other magazines, including American Artist magazine.
He was author and illustrator of Rendering Techniques for Commercial Art and Advertising (1956) and of Ted Kautzky—Master of Pencil and Watercolor (1959). Head of the art department at BBDO Advertising Agency in New Rochelle, NY in 1962. One of the founders of the Huguenot School of Art in New Rochelle, NY. Retired in 1962 and moved to Laguna Beach, CA in 1973.

This particular work is so deftly designed and exhibits the most intriguing positive and negative spaces. The model is rendered with loose, quick and authoritative brush strokes which give an air of chic confidence. Most of all, it's her dreamy blue eyes that truly captivate the viewer. All parts of the eye ( Iris, Pupil, Sclera ) are composed of a soft robin's egg blue which is in counterpoint the pink day-glow color on her lips. She looks at you. You look back and the process is repeated and repeated. Fuch's not just a great painter, designer, academic artist but a brilliant and innovative colorist as well. To demonstrate how great this simple work is, out of a world population of 7.2 billion people, as a betting man, I would say there may be no other artist who could render a scene this good.
