About

Oil painting - Oil on panel. Chelsea Gibson's portraits are composed of people in their homes surrounded by the quotidian clutter of their lives. Her process starts with taking many photographs of a room, having them printed out and collaging them together to make larger, sometimes irregularly shaped compositions. These collages create a feeling of being surrounded by the room and give a dynamic sense of the space. She then makes my own panels in the shape of the collage to use as her painting surface. One work could be made of various shaped panels that together bend or curve, sometimes even touching the floor. While all of her subjects are in some ways defined by and also defining their surroundings, the real potency resides in her own (seemingly unseen) presence. There is an intimacy in the paintings—a deeply personal and profound attachment to the people, things, and spaces depicted. Stacks of books, piles of papers on a table, kitchen utensils and pots and pans occupy the majority of the multi-panel works. The abundance of functional objects builds a narrative where, even in a person’s passive stance, or absence, people play an active role. oil painting, portrait, interior, home decor, realism, large scale, contemporary art
