Greenfield-Sanders’ landscape paintings invite the viewer into nostalgia, to forge a connection to their own experience. Using found vintage photography as a starting point, she creates several iterations of each image, which she alters with pencil and watercolor, and finally paints over with oil. They emerge simultaneously familiar yet enigmatic. She elaborates, stating, “All of my paintings are based on amateur slides from seventy years ago. I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory.

Born in 1967, Piussi was raised in Florence where he studied at the Istituto d’arte, majoring in sculpture and painting and completing his artistic education at Milano’s Brera Art Academy. He lives in Florence, pursuing painting, bas-reliefs in terracotta and in bronze, and bronze sculpture.
Piussi presents an ideal, almost childlike world which can be found below everyday events, a step outside the flow of time, yet still a part of contemporary life, with a nod to Alex Katz and David Hockney. The drama, or lack thereof, is played out in simplified, almost abstract spaces. Pure in intent, Piussi’s oeuvre are inspired by the Early Renaissance.
Snapshot images of a world reduced to its essence, the apparently comic-book style has echoes of Giotto, Paolo Uccello, of medieval illuminations. Rather than mimicking the appearance of nature, Piussi reaches for its essence, without distracting details. Women stand on the shore of quintessentially peaceful seas, self-contained, at ease, unwitting replicas of classical goddesses - a proud diver echoes Neptune holding a trident.

The roots for Peter Kolin’s fascinating world of Surrealist Fantasy, Magic Realist images can be traced back to the art of Mannerism, a brief period - approximately 1520 to 1610 - between the Renaissance and Age of the Baroque. In Mannerist paintings composition had no focal point and space could be ambiguous. Surreal figures could be characterized by athletic bending and twisting with distortions, exaggerations, elastic elongation of the limbs, bizarre or graceful posturing and the rendering of the heads as uniformly small and oval. (reminds me very much of some of the compositions of Salvador Dali) The composition was full of clashing symbolist colors very unlike the balanced, natural and often dramatic colors of the High Renaissance. Mannerist works presented instability and restlessness and also showed a fondness for allegories with lascivious undertones. Kolin, an exceptionally gifted painter within this tradition, creates gorgeous and mysterious fantasies of Surrealism with each work opening a new and more exciting fantastic world. His narrative world of images and symbols is presented in his own metaphorical language but with a visual accuracy solidly rooted in technical perfection. “I’m a bit of an old soul and there is a sense of elegance and beauty that has been lost in modern-day society, and I seek to recapture this essence in my work. I’m creating a sort of fantasy world of luxury, leisure, and old Hollywood glamour.”
Her work has appeared in galleries in the US and Asia and in GQ Magazine, Architectural Digest, Dwell, California Home, People, among many other publications. Her paintings hang in luxury properties including The Ritz Carlton San Francisco, The Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas, and Hilton properties across the United States, as well as in the homes of celebrity collectors including Ryan Seacrest and Kylie Jenner.

I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory.

Figurative art, as opposed to abstract art, retains features from the observable world in its representational depictions of subject matter. Most commonly, figurative paintings reference and explore the human body, but they can also include landscapes, architecture, plants and animals — all portrayed with realism.
While the oldest figurative art dates back tens of thousands of years to cave wall paintings, figurative works made from observation became especially prominent in the early Renaissance.
