About the Item
Donald Vogel was inspired by gardens throughout his painting career. Before moving to Dallas, as a student at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1930's, Vogel's studio was a block away from Chicago's Lincoln Park. About a painting of Lincoln Park, Vogel wrote, "The park offered endless challenges when exploring the tonal changes of the seasons and the various configurations formed by its trees, paths, bridges and pond. Its influence remains active in my work." (Vogel Retrospective, 1998, page 93) Later, after founding Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden in 1954, the garden view from his studio window became a constant inspiration.
