JD Henderson
Sunlit Path

1990-2000

About the Item

Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Sunlit Path' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, gives us this country garden scene dated 1999 (verso), signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The lush garden scene is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Sunlit Path' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The garden color may or may not be the natural color of the flowers, but it is the use of color that brings the garden subject to vivid life and perspective. Henderson has been painting since the mid 20th century. His paintings have been exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and exhibited in galleries in Glasgow and elsewhere. The frame, style and size are matched by another JD Henderson work available for sale, 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder'. A third painting available for sale, 'Middleton Farm, Comrie' also by JD Henderson, would go well in a grouping with the other two. All are available at present by the same seller, Saltire Gallerie. All three richly-colored oil paintings were acquired in Scotland and imported to the US by Saltire Gallerie. This painting and 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquihidder' had glass coverings removed when the new matching frames were added. This impacted the direct representations of color and broad post impressionist brushstrokes, making them more visible and alive. All are in excellent condition, all painted in the 1990s, two presented in matching new frames. No damage or defect has been detected. Ready to hang!

  • Printemps
    By Charles Levier
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...
