About the Item

This superb British Orientalist oil painting is by noted artist Edmund Aubrey Hunt. Painted in 1916, the composition is a Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca. Hunt and his second wife Maude Chadwick settled in Tangier after they married in 1892 and he perfected his Orientalist paintings whilst there for 10 years. In this British Impressionist painting, hundreds of people are flooding through an ornate doorway in a city wall and down the street towards the artist/viewer. Many are dressed in white but some wear vibrant green or yellow robes and carry huge flags. Towards the front is a pint covered sedan chair or small carriage, pulled by a black horse. The sky is a vibrant blue and one can feel the heat and almost hear the noise from the musicians at the front of the procession. Hunt must have witnessed many scenes like this and has perfected his artistry in depicting the magic. The vibrant colours and brush work are superb. This is an excellent example of Hunt's Orientalist paintings from that period. Signed lower left. Provenance. Surrey estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate frame, 30 inches by 26 inches, in good condition. Edmund Aubrey Hunt (17 February 1855, in Weymouth, Massachusetts – 22 November 1922, in Hastings, East Sussex) was an American-born painter; primarily of landscapes and rural scenes, although he also created Orientalist works. Some generally reliable art websites give his first name as Edward. A few erroneously give his birthplace as Weymouth, England. His father was the entrepreneur and inventor, Edmund Soper Hunt, who operated a fireworks factory, made ladies' fans, and devised improvements to the line-throwing cannon, used in marine rescue operations. After graduating from college, he entered the prominent architectural firm of Emerson and Fehmer, but decided to pursue a career as an artist instead. He received his initial art instruction from Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He studied there for five years, altogether. During that time, he also travelled throughout Europe. In 1878, while making copies in the Louvre, he met Agnes Fitzgibbon, from England. They were married shortly after. The newlywed couple moved to London, where he had recently held several exhibits. He frequently took paintings back to the United States, where they were exhibited at galleries in Boston. His local venues included the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Royal Academy. While in England, he continued to travel; visiting France, the Low Countries, Italy and Morocco, which inspired his first Orientalist works. His marriage to Agnes ended in the late 1880s, and their four children went with her, but he met another Englishwoman, the well-to-do Maude Chadwick, during a trip to North Africa, and they were married in 1892. Both admirers of the area, they settled in Tangier, where they lived for ten years. He perfected his Orientalist paintings there, and became an acquaintance of the local ruler. After the birth of a daughter, they returned to England and settled in Huntingdonshire, where they had a son. Later, they moved to Rye and, during World War I, to Hastings. When he died, his body was cremated and returned to his hometown for burial.

By Gordon B. Coutts 1
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gordon B. Coutts (Scottish/American, 1868-1937) A very fine and large orientalist oil on canvas titled "Ashura Rituals, Tangier" (Arabic: عاشوراء‎ ʻĀshūrā’ - Urdu: عاشورا‎ - Persian: عاشورا‎ - Turkish: Aşure Günü). Signed and inscribed: 'Gordon Coutts/TANGIER' (lower right), circa 1920. Provenance: The Fisher Art Museum, University of Southern California. Gordon Coutts led a peripatetic career, born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he then studied and travelled to Glasgow, London, Paris and Rome before settling in Melbourne, Australia in 1891. In 1896 he moved to Sydney, where he taught at the Art Society of New South Wales, before returning back to Europe in 1899. With the climate of northern Europe detrimental to Coutts' poor health, he moved with his wife, Alice Grey, to the United States where he became a frequent exhibitor at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. In 1920 he travelled to Tangiers, Morocco where, dressed as an Arab, he passed from tribe to tribe observing the lifestyle, customs and practices of the the village people and Bedouins. The present work depicts the celebration of Ashura. The day of Ashura is commemorated by Shi'ite Muslims; "A day of pain, pilgrimage and pageantry, it is one of the holiest in their religion. The word Ashura means 10, and refers to the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. This is a period of mourning and cleansing, which marks the martyrdom of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad...
