Huldah Mae Cherry
Dessert in the Garden

c. 1920s

About the Item

Provenance: This is an early painting by Huldah Mae Cherry (also known as Huldah Cherry Jeffe), done in her "Impressionist years" and painted after a painting by another American Impressionist, Lawton Parker entitled "Breakfast in the Garden", oil on canvas 81.3 x 81.3 cm (see attached image as it appeared in Vol. XIX, No 2007 American Art Review). Huldah was born in Dallas, Texas, where the previous owner of this painting resided. The previous owner states: "In the mid 1970's I had a lady friend who was a close personal friend of Huldah Cherry Jeffe. Through this connection, I met Huldah. Huldah was living in Palm Beach, Florida but would occasionally come to Dallas to see her mother. Her mother lived here with her son, Max, Huldah's brother. Huldah's mother was getting quite old and Max looked after her.. Huldah supported them. Max, who was a character, was a one time Captain in the Mexican army and a soldier of fortune type, who would occasionally run short of money, and knowing my interest in Huldah's work would call me and offer some of Huldah's works that were in her mother's home. I bought 6 that I can remember and I believe they are some of her best. The painting I shipped to you was done during her early years and during her "Impressionist" era according to her. I have truly enjoyed these and particularly since I knew Huldah. She was truly a high class lady. I hope someone who appreciates nice things obtains this and enjoys it as much as I have" Huldah Mae Cherry "Dessert in the Garden" c. 1920s Oil on Canvas Signed Lower Left Canvas: 36 x 28 inches Framed: approx. 43.5 x 35 inches An American fine artist born in Dallas, Texas, Huldah Cherry was an accomplished figure painter who studied at the Art Student's League and Grand Central School in New York City. She also attended private classes taught by Robert Brackman. Huldah began her career in the 1940s. From 1934-1949 she was represented by the noted New York art dealer and collector, Howard Young. In the 1950s, the Charles Lock Galleries of New York also exhibited her work. In 1975 Wally Findlay Galleries in New York presented her first one-woman show. Four of her works were purchased by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Her paintings have been reproduced by the New York Graphics Society since 1946 and by Hallmark cards since 1953. Huldah has had her paintings selected for the Grand Salon of the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris. She won Honorable Mention awards on the Salons of 1948 and 1967. For her subject matter, she focused on turn-of-the-century women and adolescent girls. Her young ladies are costumed in the fashionable attire of the period, and her style hints of impressionism with a strong Renoir influence. Inspired by a period known as La Belle Epoque, Huldah's designs were incorporated into thirty-one collectible porcelain works of art which were created between 1959 and 1968 and distributed into the 1980s. Huldah retired in Palm Beach Florida, and is the wife of General J. E. Jeffe. She is listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who of American Women and the World Who's Who of Women. In addition to museums, her paintings are in the collections of the Cornell Medical Center, and in the Los Angeles Athletic Club. And in 1998 the national Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC recognized Huldah and has included her work on their permanent collection.

In 1990, he was voted official artist for Scottsdale's Parada del Sol, the "world's largest" horse-drawn parade commemorating the Old West. Andersen grew up on an apple farm in New Hampshire and learned about Indian customs from his many hours spent at the Chicago Museum of Natural History. He is meticulous about being historically accurate in his paintings. Of him it was written: "There are no 'happy accidents' in an Andersen painting. He has a knowledge of his subject that is attained only through extensive research. You will not find an Apache medicine bag...

Paul Cornoyer “Central Park Autumn” c. 1910 Oil on Canvas Framed Size: approx 29 x 35 inches Canvas Size: approx 22 x 26.5 inches Provenance: The Artist to Private Collection, St. Louis thence by Descent Conservation report: Excellent condition. On original canvas, not relined. No in-painting. Paul Cornoyer was born in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied there at the School of Fine Arts in 1881. His first works were in a Barbizon mode, and his first exhibit was in 1887. In 1889, he went to Paris for further training, studying at the Academie Julien, and returned to St. Louis in 1894. By the early 1890s, his work was more lyrical and Tonal, and he applied this style to subjects such as cityscapes and landscapes. In 1894, he painted a mural depicting the birth of St. Louis for the Planters Hotel in that city. His activities during the next six years were not particularly profitable, however, and the whereabouts of his St. Louis paintings are scarcely known. One exception is the triptych, A View of Saint Louis, with its strong urban realism. It shows the Eads Bridge...

"The Artist's Wife at the Loom, " Harry Hoffman, Bright American Impressionism
By Harry Leslie Hoffman

Harry Leslie Hoffman (1871 - 1964) The Artist's Wife (Beatrice Pope) at the Loom, circa 1915 Oil on canvas 30 x 32 inches Housed in a period Newcomb-Macklin frame Provenance: Estate of the artist Private Collection, Massachusetts This painting depicts the artist's wife at the loom, producing textile versions of Hoffman's underwater paintings. The screen shown behind Bea is an underwater scene also painted by Hoffman. The study of this painting is held in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum in Florida. Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910 Hoffman...
