Sibyl is a painting made in 2023 by Ioana Baltan, and is part from the ‘Feast of the Immortals’ series. Born from the exploration of femininity and symbolism in ancient Greek myths, Feast of the Immortals, is a series of works created by Ioana Baltan in 2023 in London.
The collection embodies large to medium works that have at their core a feminist perspective over the Homeric texts. Within this series, Ioana brings an intimate view over the life of the goddesses.
She renders the classical myths, using a contemporary aesthetics of feminine beauty trends, and fashion. She is intrigued by the contrast of how women were portrayed in ancient myths, sometimes as beauty icons, and sometimes as grotesque monsters. In her paintings, the goddesses are depicted in an idealistic manner accomplished with a polished technique and hyper-realistic details.
By contrast, the environment is often dramatic with a touch of surrealism. The setting frequently featured symbols such as exotic animals and plants, apocalyptic landscapes that highlight the artist's idea of fantasy and mystic accentuating the strength of the women.
