This commission for The Saturday Evening Post is a brilliant example of Joseph Christian Leyendecker's technical prowess and the qualities that make him one of illustration's biggest names. The composition immediately registers with the eye: The stance of the clown effectively fills the composition, while remaining dynamic. The naturalistic pose of the poodle creates a sense of motion. This sense of action is accentuated further by the unseen stage lighting, illuminating the figure from below, conveying a sense of scale and drama. At the time, The Saturday Evening Post covers were not yet using full-color printing technology, therefore Leyendecker is working with a limited palette of reds, whites, and blacks. The artist deftly utilizes a primary palette to guide the eye across the composition with an illusion of rhythm. All these qualities combine to create a stunning image with great impact, perfectly crafted to attract the eye and draw in customers, exemplary of Leyendecker's mastery of communicative illustration.

Joseph Christian Leyendecker
Joseph Christian "J.C." Leyendecker was born in Germany in 1874. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1882. His eldest brother, Adolph, became a prominent stained glass artist, and Joe, as he was called, had an early artistic calling.
After studying at the Chicago Art Institute under John H. Vanderpoel, J.C. Leyendecker enrolled at the Académie Julien in 1896, where he studied for a year with his younger brother Frank in the Beaux-Arts tradition. During his time there, he was exposed to and influenced by the works of Art Nouveau painters and printmakers Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Chéret and Alphonse Mucha, with whom he formed a strong friendship. The next year, he staged his first one-man exhibition at the Salon du Champ-de-Mars and made the auspicious acquaintance of Paul Gauguin.
In 1898, Leyendecker produced the first of 48 covers for Collier’s magazine. The next year, he painted his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post magazine, which was the beginning of a 44-year association with that esteemed publication. Throughout his career, he would also paint covers for Life magazine, illustrations for a library of books, and transform advertising for such companies as B. Kuppenheimer & Co. and Interwoven Socks. His work for Arrow Shirt is the most well-known and beloved.
Using his lover and manager, Charles Beach, as a model, Leyendecker created the ultimate image of modern American masculinity. His work for Kuppenheimer, also known as the House of Kuppenheimer, is just as iconic. Founded in 1876, the company became the manufacturer of uniforms for the United States Army during World War I. Thanks to Leyendecker's advertising, the firm became synonymous with the ultimate in male taste and desirability.
Unfortunately, near the end of his career, as Leyendecker’s associations with Collier’s and The Saturday Evening Post came to an end, his work fell into obscurity. When he died in 1951, his great friend Norman Rockwell, who commemorated their relationship in his painting Waiting for the Art Editor, served as one of his pallbearers.

Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery and costumes. In the artist’s theatrical work, his mastery of form, ornamentation, and Orientalism became increasingly evident. He excelled at combining fluid Art Nouveau outlines, with spiky Expressionist passages, and the postures and patterns of the mysterious East.
In his later years, Schnackenberg explored the unconscious, using surreal subject matter and paler colors that plainly portrayed dreams and visions, some imbued with political connotations. His drawings, illustrations, folio prints, and posters are highly sought today for their exceedingly imaginative qualities, enchanting subject matter, and arresting use of color.

Jack Henderson (1931-1998) taught at the Art Students League for many years and had a studio in at 30 East 14th Street, New York City. In that building were many other artists including Henderson's teacher and long-time collaborator, Edward Laning. A Kansas City native, Henderson was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship and a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. He continued the Miller/Laning tradition of travel to Italy to study the masters of the Renaissance and the goal of fine figure painting as the ultimate artistic achievement.
