About the Item

Léon Bompard (French, early 20th Century) Harbour Scene with Fishermen, Boats and Fish Market Oil on canvas, circa 1900–1920 This charming harbour composition by the French painter Léon Bompard depicts the bustling life of a coastal town at the turn of the 20th century. The scene unfolds along the quayside, where fishermen unload their catch, figures gather in lively exchange, and tall-masted vessels fly the French tricolour against a luminous sky. Executed with the brisk, sunlit brushwork characteristic of the French Impressionist school, Bompard’s painting captures the immediacy of maritime life — the shimmer of light across rigging, the ochre tones of the harbour buildings, and the rhythmic movement of townsfolk as they cross the quay. The composition balances architectural solidity on the left with the open expanse of sea and ships to the right, producing a harmonious interplay between man-made structure and the elemental world of the sea. Works such as this reflect both the artist’s sensitivity to local life and his embrace of the Impressionist desire to paint en plein air, recording not only the physical details of a scene but also its atmosphere, colour, and transience. Harbour scenes by Bompard are relatively rare, making this a desirable example for collectors of French Impressionist and maritime painting. The ornate gilt frame with scrolling acanthus leaf detail complements the painting’s lively tonality, presenting it as both a decorative and historically evocative piece — ideal for a refined interior or as part of a collection dedicated to early 20th-century European painting.

English 19thC Victorian Shipping scene with fishing boats in the English Channel
By William Anslow Thornley
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honourable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...

Oil Sketch of a French boat yard, with men in a wood saw pit in harbor landscape
By Jacques-Eugene Feyen
Located in Woodbury, CT
Excellent quality Oil Sketch of a French boat yard, with men in a wood, saw pit in a harbor landscape. The elder brother of painter Auguste Feyen-Perrin, Jacques-Eugène enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts and studied under Paul Delaroche. He had a notable career at the Paris Salon from 1841 to 1882. Vincent van Gogh was a fan of Feyen and describes him as, "one of the few painters who pictures intimate modern life as it really is, and does not turn it into fashion plates." He set up a studio and settled in summer in the town of Cancale. He spent several months every year painting views of Cancale, the oyster-picking Cancalaises, and the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, and his paintings still enjoy steady fame. This sketch came from a collection of sketches...
