About the Item

Artist Margaret Fitzhugh Browne was born in West Roxbury, Massachusetts on June 7, 1884. After graduating from the Boston Latin School in 1903, she attended the Massachusetts Normal Art School from 1904-1909, studying with Joseph DeCamp, Richard Andrew, and color theorist Albert Munsell. She entered the Museum School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1909 and received instruction Frank W. Benson and Edmund Tarbell. Browne maintained a studio in the Fenway Studios, Boston and one in Annisquam on Cape Ann, where she also taught classes. From 1919-1920, she was the art editor for the Boston Evening Transcript, and published a book, Portrait Painting, in 1933. Though she also painted genre scenes and still lifes, Browne was best known as a portraitist. A prestigious commission in 1927 sent her to Spain to paint King Alphonso XIII for the New York Yacht Club. Other sitters at the height of her career included Henry Ford, along with prominent politicians, socialites, artists, authors, physicians, and athletes. Browne was an active member in a number of art associations, such as the Copley Society, Guild of Boston Artists, North Shore Arts Association (of which she was president beginning in 1935), Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Allied Artists of America, and the Boston Art Club. Browne died in 1972, just before reaching her eighty-eighth birthday. The Copley Society continues to award the Margaret Fitzhugh Browne Memorial Award for Excellence in Portraiture in her name. In her 1933 book, Portrait Painting, Browne advises portraitists to work quickly to capture their sitter's features in order not to exhaust their clients with endless sittings. [Woman in White Dress, Gloucester] depicts a sitter in fine summer dress placed upon a stone wall in front of an Annisquam harbor scene. The portrait displays Browne's trademark nimble brushstrokes, indicative of her advice to work quickly. The simplified forms of the sitter and her surroundings are also hallmarks of the artist's work. A firm adherent to realism, Browne's portraits like [Woman in White Dress, Gloucester] were painted with expressive force but in the simplest of planes in order to instill a degree of power without crudeness.

She went on to study under Charles Hawthorne at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and with Robert Henri at the Art Students League in New York. During the years 1920 through 1940 Ryerson taught in New York settlement houses. There she got the privilege to paint and draw the children in their care.
