Christ as a Gardener by Edouard Manet
Located in New Orleans, LA
Edouard Manet 1832-1883 French Christ as a Gardener Oil on canvas Beloved for his invaluable role in the development of the Impressionist movement, Edouard Manet's artworks are foundational to the canon of art history. The revolutionary artist's rare religious works, while lesser-known, are some of the most intimate paintings he ever produced, offering insight into the artist’s fascination with the idea of humanity’s beautiful and transcendent relationship with suffering. Begun in 1856, Christ as a Gardener is one of his earliest renderings of Christ and offers a view into nascent motifs that would later define Manet’s monumental legacy. In the painting, Christ’s profile is turned toward the viewer, though his face is turned to the bottom left of the frame and his downturned eyes avert the viewer's gaze. His brown robes contrast the warm light of his halo and the dramatic sky behind him. As with all of Manet’s work, this image is rich with symbolism. A partial self-portrait, as seen in the similar facial hair and iconic appearance of a paintbrush-like garden tool, the painting renders the biblical scene of Mary Magdalene mistaking the risen Christ for a gardener with personal intimacy. As the biblical tale relays, when Mary Magdalene recognizes Christ, she reaches out to him; he replies, “Touch me not.” The highly charged relationship between the Christ figure and the viewer, standing in as Mary Magdalene, is further emphasized by Christ’s hand that appears to reach out for contact. Through this extension of touch, Christ’s presence is tangible, reminiscent of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. This intimate initiation of human connection directly contrasts Christ’s biblical words, “Touch me not.” Scholars have attributed this rejection, both in gaze and through words, to Manet’s conviction that Christ, as a human, embodied a spirit of renunciation and rejection of his earthly existence. Christ’s distant expression suggests a willingness to be elsewhere — an expression that Manet will later use in his most distinguished works of art. Manet would go on to expand his view of Christ as a timeless embodiment of absolute commitment and suffering with his monumental Salon paintings...

19th Century genre oil painting of a woman & child in a Welsh cottage
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Alfred Provis British, (1818-1890) By the Fireside Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1869 Image size: 10.5 inches x 15.5 inches Size including frame: 21.5 inches x 26.5 inches This charming cottage scene by Alfred Provis features a woman preparing supper by a fire with her young daughter. As the mother peels the turnips and places them in the pot, the girl’s attention is drawn to the kitten feeding from a saucer. The dress and hat of the woman bears a similarity to those found Provis’s other scenes of Welsh cottage interiors. The artist was known to have visited North Wales around the time this painting was produced. In 1869, he exhibited a work entitled ‘Interior of a Welsh Farmhouse’ at the Royal Society of British Artists. Given the level of detail in the painting and the fact that it is in such an impressive original frame, it is possible this is the same painting as the one exhibited. Alfred Provis was a genre painter born on 18 February, 1818 in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He was the son of John Provis, a timber merchant and his second wife Ann Banks. He spent time in London being tutored by the historical and portrait artist John Wood (1801-1870) before returning to Chippenham. He began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1843, continuing to exhibit there regularly until 1886. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1846 with a work entitled ‘A Cottage Door...

Le Quai d’Orsay - Impressionist City Landscape Oil Painting by Luigi Loir
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed figures in cityscape oil on canvas circa 1890 by French impressionist painter Luigi Loir. The piece depicts people at the Quai d'Orsay, situated on the left bank of the River Seine in Paris, France on what looks to be a cold winter day in the city. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 20"x16.5" Unframed: 13"x9.5" Provenance: Private French collection Blanchet & Associes - Paris He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865 with a Landscape at Villiers-sur-Seine which brought him a certain amount of recognition. He was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français. Obtaining a third-place medal in 1879, and a second-place medal and a gold medal in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur in 1898. Born in Austria to French parents who served the exiled French Bourbon royal family, Luigi Aloys-François-Joseph Loir moved with his family and the Bourbons to the Duchy of Parma in 1847. In 1860 his family returned to Paris following the expulsion of the Bourbons from Parma. But Luigi remained in the city, having enrolled, at the young age of eight, at the Accademia de Belle Arti. He eventually rejoined his family in Paris in 1863. There he studied with the decorative painter and set designer Jean Pastelot, making his Salon debut in 1865. Loir painted mainly views of Paris, in all seasons and at different times of the day or night. Loir was the Paris painter par excellence, capturing and expressing all aspects of the life of the city at all hours of the day and night. He may be criticised for excessive attention to the process, but his invaluable powers of observation are undeniable. Apart from those of his canvases which are in museum collections, his best-known works include: Preparations for the Fun Fair (acquired for the Salle d...

Symbol of Memories
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Symbol of Memories 1 is an original painting by Oladimeji Alabi. Oladimeji created the Symbol of Memories with Mixed Media on a 30W by 50H inches primed canvas. The symbol of Memories is inspired by the story of my childhood. The objects and signs we grew up with as a child in our homes become symbols of our memories today. Art has the ability to evoke strong emotions and convey meaningful messages. One such artwork that does just that is "Symbol of Memories," a stunning piece that uses the mother as a symbol of life and hope. This artwork is made even more significant by the use of damask fabric, which was popular among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and used for making gele, the head ties worn by women. The artwork speaks volumes about the importance of mothers in society. The mother is dressed in a vibrant damask fabric, which adds a sense of richness and texture to the painting. The use of damask fabric in the painting is significant as it represents a part of Nigerian culture and history. Damask was a popular fashion among Nigerian women in the late 70s to 90s and was used to make gele, the head ties worn by women on special occasions. The fabric is often associated with elegance, sophistication, and beauty, which adds a layer of meaning to the artwork. The mother in the painting is the focal point of the artwork, symbolizing the importance of mothers in society. Mothers are the backbone of families, providing love, support, and guidance to their children. They are often the ones who hold families together through difficult times, serving as a symbol of hope and resilience. The use of the damask fabric in the painting also represents the concept of memories. The fabric has a rich history in Nigerian culture, and for many people, it is a symbol of their childhood and the memories they hold dear. The painting serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving memories, both good and bad, and how they shape our lives. Overall, "Symbol of Memories" is a beautiful piece of art that celebrates the role of mothers in society. The use of damask fabric adds a layer of meaning to the painting, representing the importance of preserving memories and the rich culture of Nigeria. The mother as a focused subject symbolizes life and hope, the fabric applied in this art is called damask, which was a popular fashion among Nigerian women around the late 70s to 90s used for making gele(the head ties). Ophelia, Victorian 19th Century Royal Academy Oil Painting
Located in London, GB
Oil on canvas, signed lower right Image size: 33 1/2 x 56 1/2 inches (85 x 143 cm) Original gilt frame Provenance With the artist's son, Millie Dow Stott Esq., until 1912. Artist's Studio Sale, Christies, November 1913. Private Collection Exhibitions London, Royal Academy, 1895, no. 679. Paris, Societe de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts, 1896, no. 1179. Berlin, VII Internationale Kunstausstellung 1897. no. 3533. Manchester, City of Manchester Art Gallery, 1912, no. 339. In the 1890s William Stott exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, mainly highly decorative works with subjects derived from classical mythology and literature. This painting was Stott's 1895 entry to the Royal Academy and was subsequently exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1896 and then on to the Berlin, VII Internationale Kunstausstellung 1897. Shakespeare was a favourite source for Victorian painters, and the tragic romance of Ophelia, from Hamlet, was an especially popular subject, featuring regularly in the Royal Academy exhibitions. The most popular and iconic image of Ophelia's death was, and is to this day, John Everett Millais's 1851 painting showing the confused and tragic Ophelia floating downstream on her back in a state of mad ecstasy, arms raised in a gesture of inevitable submission. However, although Stott chose not to pastiche this image, it seems highly likely that he was prompted to take up this subject, which had almost become a 'rite of passage' among Victorian painters, by the fact that in 1894 Millais's Ophelia was presented to the National Gallery of British Art by Sir Henry Tate. It appears that Stott was much influenced by John William Waterhouse...

Energy
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Oladimeji Alabi, a Nigerian contemporary artist, created a thought-provoking artwork titled "Energy," which emphasizes the essence of energy, both positive and negative, according to African spirituality. The artwork is a vivid depiction of the concept of karma, which is fundamental to African spirituality, and the law of nature, which states that what you give out, you get back in turn. The central piece of the artwork is a painting of a human figure, seemingly in a state of contemplation with her flowing hair. "What you give out, you get back in turn." This phrase is a direct reference to the concept of karma, which is prevalent in African spirituality. Karma is the belief that our actions have consequences, and that every action we take has an effect on our lives and the lives of those around us. Furthermore, the artwork emphasizes the importance of energy, both positive and negative, and how it affects our lives. According to African spirituality, everything in the universe is interconnected, and energy flows through all things. Positive energy is associated with good fortune, success, and happiness, while negative energy is associated with misfortune, failure, and sadness. In conclusion, Oladimeji Alabi's artwork "Energy" is a beautiful and thought-provoking piece that embodies the essence of African spirituality. The artwork's central message of karma and the law of nature is a powerful reminder that our actions have consequences and that we must be mindful of the energy we put out into the world. The artwork is a testament to the artist's skill and creativity, and it is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who view it. Dutch Winter landscape with children playing on the ice by Per Wickenberg, 1839
Located in Stockholm, SE
Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century. He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years. After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837. In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske". Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands. Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details. Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold. In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality. This is a wonderful painting by a talented artist - who devoted almost his entire life to the art of painting. Artist: Per (Pehr) Wickenberg (1812-1846) Swedish Title: Dutch Winter landscape with children...

Les deux soeurs by Federico Zandomeneghi
Located in New Orleans, LA
Federico Zandomeneghi 1841-1917 Italian Les deux soeurs (The two sisters) Signed and dated "Zandomeneghi 95" (lower left) Oil on canvas Two sisters enjoy a quiet moment in a rich green landscape in this intimate oil on canvas from Federico Zandomeneghi. An Italian painter by birth who became a fixture in the Parisian Impressionist scene, Zandomeneghi is best remembered for his sentimental and affectionate scenes of women in both domestic and public spheres. Zandomeneghi’s creative and technical prowess in composition is highlighted in this painting. The artist deftly frames the young pair in the lower register of the canvas, imbuing the work with a remarkably observational feel. The girls pensively gaze off to the right, lost in thought; Zandomeneghi allows the viewer to witness a natural moment of discussion and contemplation shared among the sisters. The soft palette employed by the artist gives the whole scene an atmospheric glow, with dappled rays of sunshine breaking through the lush foliage. Though the girls remain in the shaded areas of the landscape, Zandomeneghi’s skillful application of paint allows a brightness to remain nevertheless. Federico Zandomeneghi was born in Venice to a long line of neoclassical sculptors. As if created to be an artist, Zandomeneghi began his artistic education early, enrolling in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice at just 15 years old before transferring to the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. By 1862, the artist had arrived in Florence, where he became fast acquaintances with several Italian artists dedicated to executing landscape paintings en plein air. Zandomeneghi embraced the spontaneity, seeking to bring unparalleled luminosity to his works. When Zandomeneghi arrived in Paris in 1874, he found kindred spirits...
