Style: Post-Impressionist
Period: 19th Century
La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work.
Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants.
By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...

Robert Kiener (1866-1945) Couple & Calf in Horse Sleigh Oil Painting Switzerland
By Robert Kiener
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Robert Kiener
(Swiss, * 14.2.1866 Bolligen, † 2.8.1945 Bern)
• Early oil on canvas – most likely painted in the late 19thC
• Original ebonized frame ca. 66.5 x 38 cm (Traces of age)
• Stretcher ca. 58 x 30 cm
• Signed bottom left
A charming winter scene by Robert Kiener depicting an elderly couple with a calf in a open one horse sleigh. Allthough I presume the calf is on the way to the market, I prefer to believe it is on a fun ride through the snowy Swiss landscape.
The unusual painting seems to be a relative early work by Kiener. It is in a pleasingly clean and untouched condition (no repairs, nor restoration) and can be hung as it, radiating its wonderful century old charm.
Robert Kiener was born 1866 and raised in Bolligen, just outside Bern in Switzerland. He attended the Kunst Gewerbeschule in Bern and during his studies, being the talented young artist he was, he would earn an income designing ornamental ceramic tiles for fireplaces...

Tête de paysanne à la coiffe blanche
Oil on canvas laid down on panel
A striking and evocative example of Vincent van Gogh’s early portraiture, Tête de paysanne à la coiffe blanche showcases the artists’ powerful ability to capture both the likeness and the essence of his sitters. Rendered in thick, deliberate brushstrokes, van Gogh paints his sitter with an unbroken forward gaze. The composition's tertiary palette conjures a dimly lit evening setting, accentuating the dramatic lighting of the subject's solemn face. The woman’s white headpiece...

Belle Epoque portrait of young woman, Adele in a silk robe
Located in Cotignac, FR
Belle Epoque, French late 19th century female portrait (oil on canvas by Raymond Allegre 1857-1933) of a period beauty wearing a silk robe, magnificent gold collier and flowers to her hair. Created at the same time as the iconic portraits of beauties by Gustav Klimt. A rare work for the artist who is best known for his views of Venice, the countryside of Provence in the South of France and as an Orientalist.
Born in Marseille in 1857 he studied at the Ecole National des Beaux Arts in Marseille. Later he moved to Paris and studied in the ateliers of Jean-Paul Laurens, Antoine Vollon and Leon Bonnat.
He showed his work in the Paris Salon from 1880 until 1932 where he won numerous prizes and his works were purchased for national collections. In 1900 two of his works, 'Algers' and 'Cassis' were installed in the iconic decoration for Le Train Bleu...
