About the Item

"The Great Man Comes to Take His Oath" Life Magazine Spread, July 4th, 1960, This epic narrative depicts the celebration of George Washington's inauguration, en route to Federal Hall in New York City, April 30, 1789. Without captions, Riggs deftly communicates to the viewer what went on in this narrative work. He uses a vocabulary of big gestures, pronounced poses and a palette of patriotic red white and blue to recreate this glorious American moment. Its location is New York Harbor as Washington approaches Wall Street. The pomp and pageantry of red carpet and stairs are in full view as cheering crowds joyously wave flags and military personnel at attention, ceremoniously prepare to receive Washington's boat. The extravagance of the scene and peak moment of drama depicted is wholly appropriate for the occasion Done in the late 1930's, this work has an epic production look and grandeur of a Cecil B. DeMille movie set. Notice the variety of period flags and costumes. There was no quick way to Google that in the 1930's and to get an accurate reference of all the detail must have been a grand undertaken. Finally, Riggs is able to obtain a likeness of Washington in small scale and in profile. Among Riggs other prodigious artistic talents, he is also a great portrait painter... even in miniature. There is a reason why there are few contemporary painters who can paint a portrait this good. It's hard to do. It's easy to throw some paint or spray a mess of graffiti on canvas. That's easy. To execute a portrait with a great depth of anatomy and structure takes years of academic training. In Riggs's time, there were teachers who knew how to pass on this knowledge. He studied at the Art Students League and the Académie Julian. Today, they are very few and far between.
