About the Item

A pair of large Glasgow School oil on canvas portraits by Scottish artist Stuart Mackenzie. The works are presented in plain baton wood frames. Though not signed the paintings were acquired directly from the artist and thence by descent. A pair of very strong and powerful paintings of children. We the viewer are firmly held in the gaze of 'Her' and 'Him'. Mackenzie has achieved a remarkable play of light and shade that changes completely depending on the lighting. The paintings are full of the characters of the sitters and the humour of the subjects changes from different viewpoints. They are a real statement piece that would be imposing in any interior and would grace any collection. 'Her' is of a girl in her school smock and blouse, hair held back with an 'Alice' band but still in slight disarray. There is a cross around her neck which suggests she may be at a convent or religious school. 'Him' is of a boy in his school uniform, shorts, long socks, shirt and jerkin jumper, the whole outfit slightly in disarray, one can imagine him with a slingshot in his back pocket. Stuart Mackenzie was born in 1959. He studied at The Edinburgh College Of Art from 1979 to 1983 and then courtesy of The Richard Ford Award in Madrid, Spain. He was the first Artist in residence in Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1987, taught at Robert Gordon’s University from 1987/88, and has taught in The Glasgow School Of Art since 1988, where he currently teaches the Mlitt (Masters in Painting) and is Pathway Leader in Mlitt (Masters) drawing. He has been a Visiting Artist in many national/international Institutions and an external examiner for Leeds Metropolitan University. He is a member of The Academic Council at The Glasgow School Of Art, The Exhibitions Committee, and a Council Member of The Royal Scottish Academy. He is also the Convenor of The Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries Exhibition and sits on The Committee for The Richard Ford Award Madrid Scholarships ( London). Stuart has shown nationally and internationally, and his work is held in many public and private collections and has been the recipient of many awards and prizes. Recent Exhibitions include: The Club at the Ivy at The London Book Fair, 2015; ‘Surface Value’, James Freeman Gallery, 2015; ‘Learning to Draw, Drawing to Learn’, The Fleming Collection (which he jointly curated with Professor Roger Wilson), 2013; Donghau University Shanghai, 2013; ‘Subtle Subversion’, a drawing conference, 2013; Scottish Drawing Royal Scottish Academy 2014; and The Annual Exhibition Royal Scottish Academy, 2014 and 2015. Mother and Child, Ecole de Paris, Large Oil on Canvas
By Guy Cambier
Located in Cotignac, FR
Ecole de Paris, mid century oil on canvas portrait of a mother and child by Guy Cambier. The painting is signed bottom left and there is a very faint chalk inscription with date to the back of the canvas. Presented in a fine custom gilt wood frame. This exquisite painting captures a tender, timeless moment between a mother and child, rendered with soft, evocative brushstrokes. The palette of muted earth tones with hints of blue and lavender imbues the scene with warmth and serenity. The mother, adorned in flowing robes, gazes downward with a gentle, contemplative expression, while the child's innocent face exudes calm and trust, resting securely in her embrace. The textured background, a blend of abstract patterns, contrasts with the smooth rendering of the figures, enhancing the ethereal atmosphere. The intricate gold frame adds a classic touch, emphasizing the painting's traditional elegance. This piece masterfully balances realism with expressive elements, capturing the universal essence of maternal love and protection. Its timeless appeal invites the viewer to reflect on the enduring bond depicted with grace and sensitivity. Guy Cambier (1923-2008) was born in Uccle-lez-Bruxelles, Belgium in 1923. He was part of the Post War School of Paris, Ecole De Paris, that included Andre Hambourg, Jean Carzou, Marcel Gromaire and Yolande Ardissone. At the age of nine years old, he lost the use of his legs caused by a tragic accident. An autodidact he studied the techniques and works of those artists he emulated, Corot and Watteau. Cambier started to exhibit in 1942, first in Belgium and afterwards in France on the Cote d’Azur as well as in the United States and in Paris at the Salon des Peintres Temoins de Leur Temps. In 1957, he received the Parisian award, “Le Prix de la Jeune Peintre”. He moved to the South of France in 1950 and resided in Grasse, where he spent most of the rest of his life as did so many famous painters at that time. Cambier became a favourite portrait artist of several celebrities and painted such dignitaries as Princess Grace of Monaco, Winston Churchill, Ingrid Bergman and Edward G Robinson...
