Swiss artist Edith Konrad paints figurative abstract compositions with mixed media on canvas. Simon Gaon (born 1943) is an American painter, Expressionist, and action painter. This is a thick impasto oil painting. with a lot of texture and color. Times Square with 42nd st in Manhattan, New York city He is best known for his intense, tempestuous, action oriented paintings of the cityscape. He was also a co-founder of the Street Painters, a group of eight New York City artists who painted directly from the city life they observed on the streets of America's largest city. Born in 1943 in Manhattan, Gaon at an early age displayed creative talents. By age 14 he began painting while attending the Roosevelt School in Stamford, Connecticut. A key influence on him was painter Arthur Bressler (1927–1975) who was Gaon's teacher and mentor. Gaon graduated from the High School of Art and Design in New York City. In 1962, Gaon won the art studio award scholarship from the Art Students League which allowed him to study art on the European continent. In 1964, he studied in Academia 63 in Haarlem, the Netherlands, and furthered his European education with the Art Students League Merit Scholarship (1965) and the Edward G. McDowell traveling scholarship. He later stayed more than ten years in Europe, primarily in Paris, where his style evolved. The works of the Fauvist (Fauve) painters - Andre Derain, Maurice Vlaminck as well as Chaim Soutine, Oskar Kokoschka, Lovis Corinth, Gen Paul, and especially Vincent Van Gogh have all strongly influenced his work. All forms of creative and recreational cultural expression are or should be an invitation to travel. Music, literature, poetry, theater, cinema, painting, sculpture, photography, and so on, are no exceptions to this rule when they carry a stamp of sincerity. An act of expression can only be authentic if it is not motivated by the constraints laid down by obligations, by recognition. Painting, like other means of expression, is a cry, a feeling, a listening process, pain, joy... a realization or an epiphany to be shared with my family and friends and with people who go to my exhibitions. In the former case I experience a real moment of sharing, a kind of osmosis. A work - irrespective of what it contains - is only successful as an act of expression if it contains life, something to think about, feelings a pathway to an exchange, an invitation concerning it and the observer. If this communion takes place, then the work is a good one. When the architecture of a work, its theme, the balance of forms and colors, the mobility or freedom of the eye, the seeing, and the thinking, are all present in a kind of harmony, there are no longer any obstacles between a work and us. After painting for more than 50 years, I have had many opportunities during the course of my exhibitions to express myself with visitors who wanted to go through the mirror of the initial visual impression of a painting. I find their uncertainties and their desire to know - more than just view - touching. Other visitors view, sometimes view themselves, and then continue going around a gallery having ''read'' paintings in their own ways. Some people cast a disinterested passing glance, and, very sure of themselves, continue on their way. These people are sometimes in the majority. After having worked in conjunction with several gallery-owners, exhibited my work in France and abroad, I have never agreed to sign a contract. I never express myself on an imposed topic, work, based on an order, or work at a certain speed. Art cannot be dictated, it cannot be ordered. Life, time, kindness, love, madness, freedom, money, politics, the mind, the heart, its opposite, popular and honest art, all of life's facets and asses became my life. They are my reflective and observational canvas in terms of the content of my paintings. Developments, variations on forms have taken place, but never in relation to the basics of my process. On this journey I came across ''sand'', which can be found on the surface of my paintings from 1966 to 1998 - and occasionally after 1998. We are made of dust, and must return to dust. Humbleness is a watchword which is included in one way or another, in my paintings, by means of signs or of small sentences, and this is notably the case in relation to topics addressed concerning covetousness, temptation, greed, selfishness, hypocrisy, success at any price, lying, power, money, art for money's sake people, and so forth. I hesitated a very long time before writing about my painting. I believed that doing so was a bit like usurping the role of the ''watchers'', those people who prefer to have their own interpretation, and prefer to take the tome to uncover, in the meanders of my handwriting and my short sentences, the keys, crucial details and symbols in my works - what is hiding behind the initial image. When you read a good book or listen to music, you do not make decisions based on the title of the book or on the first note...

This artwork "Mother and Child" c 1940 is an oil painting on hardboard by noted American artist Victor Thall, 1902-1983. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The board size is 23.5 x 15.5 inches, framed size is 37 x 28.5 inches. Framed in original gold wash frame, with fabric liner. The painting is in excellent condition, the frame has some minor restorations. About the artist: Victor Thall belongs to that unique American brand of rugged individualist. Working closely for a time with such painters as Gorky and de Kooning, Thall wasn't content to join the burgeoning American clique of Abstract Expressionism. Instead, on the eve of its international recognition, he abandoned New York, making a worldwide tour of indigenous cultures attempting to find a solution to the crisis of abstraction. Thall felt that painting needed to communicate in a way that Abstract Expressionism could not. Using parts of its vocabulary, Thall created work that was modern in spirit but based on fundamental traditions that he believed connected the whole history of art. In this way he resembled his contemporary Max Beckman, and it is fitting that Thall was chosen with Beckman by The New Yorker art critic Robert Coates as the best painter of the 1949 Whitney Annual. Fiercely uncompromising in his opinions, Thall sadly fell into obscurity in his later years. Yet it was a willful obscurity. But America does eventually honor her difficult individualists, even if sometimes years after their deaths. Victor Thall was born in New York in 1902. He studied at the Art Students League under Arthur B. Davies, George Bellows, George Luks, and John Sloan. Further studies were at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He left for Paris in 1924 continuing his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julien. Returning to the United States in the early 1930's, he became friendly with Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky. He participated in the WPA New Deal Art Project of New York City between 1935 and 1939. He taught at the Art Students League in the late forties and was represented in the Whitney Annual of 1949 and 1950. His paintings are in numerous private collections in the United States and Europe. Simon Gaon (born 1943) is an American painter, Expressionist, and action painter. This is a thick impasto oil painting. with a lot of texture and color. This is a nighttime scene of Midtown Manhattan, Times Square, 42nd st. New york city. He is best known for his intense, tempestuous, action oriented paintings of the cityscape. He was also a co-founder of the Street Painters, a group of eight New York City artists who painted directly from the city life they observed on the streets of America's largest city. Born in 1943 in Manhattan, Gaon at an early age displayed creative talents. By age 14 he began painting while attending the Roosevelt School in Stamford, Connecticut. A key influence on him was painter Arthur Bressler (1927–1975) who was Gaon's teacher and mentor. Gaon graduated from the High School of Art and Design in New York City. In 1962, Gaon won the art studio award scholarship from the Art Students League which allowed him to study art on the European continent. In 1964, he studied in Academia 63 in Haarlem, the Netherlands, and furthered his European education with the Art Students League Merit Scholarship (1965) and the Edward G. McDowell traveling scholarship. He later stayed more than ten years in Europe, primarily in Paris, where his style evolved. The works of the Fauvist (Fauve) painters - Andre Derain, Maurice Vlaminck as well as Chaim Soutine, Oskar Kokoschka, Lovis Corinth, Gen Paul, and especially Vincent Van Gogh have all strongly influenced his work.
