The painting depicts Anne Page and Master Slender, two characters in Shakespeare’s play The Merry Wives of Windsor. The figures are executed in a fluid and precise manner, the style of which is typical of Victorian art. Their costume is historicising, as is their architectural setting. The painting is contained within a carved giltwood frame.
