Kim Dorland
New Father

2006

About the Item

Kim Dorland (b. 1974) is among the most accomplished and collected Canadian artists of his generation. He is celebrated for his inimitable painting style, with its thick impasto and hyper-real palette. He is credited with reinvigorating the (Canadian) landscape genre by depicting dense woodlands and suburban parks, often populated with psychologically-charged figures with a visceral and raw intensity. His evocative and distinctive outdoor scenes play a central role in his otherworldly exploration of childhood, memory, and nostalgia. Dorland's work is instantly recognizable for his electric palette of neon hues, executed with rich impasto brushstrokes that are simultaneously frenetic and meticulously calculated. His incredibly tactile technique brings to life his phantasmagoric scapes, placing the viewer in a realm that hovers between dream and reality. "New Father" is part of Dorland's series "Red Deer, Alberta", which recalls memories from the artist's childhood in the Prairies. In this work, a lone figure sits atop a log amidst bare birch trees in an otherwise desolate landscape, his face entirely distorted by thick blots of paint. The forest floor is illuminated by intense neon orange underpainting that infuses the scene with a supernatural glow. At the same time, tree shadows are cast in contradicting directions, raising even more questions about the obscure location. Like the best of his work, the composition defies convention, encapsulating the viewer while offering nuanced details that invite further contemplation. Dorland's version of contemporary expressionism is truly unrivalled. Dorland was named Artist of the Year by the Globe and Mail in 2013. His work is featured in prestigious collections across the globe including the Contemporary Art Foundation (Japan), Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, to name a few. Pink Tulip
By Charles Pachter
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The Barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Completed in 2021, this exemplary painting introduces Pachter's flowers. This recent series focuses on an entirely new subject for the artist that started early on in the pandemic. Realized in a time of uncertainty and despair, this body of work is remarkably optimistic. As with the best of his work, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana, this time detailing the diverse flora encountered in his close surroundings. Capturing the profile of this romantic pink tulip...

August Rose
By Charles Pachter
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The Barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art. Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre. Completed in 2021, this exemplary painting introduces Pachter's flowers, a brand new subject for the artist that inspired a series of work early on in the pandemic. Realized in a time of uncertainty and despair, this tranquil piece is remarkably optimistic. Featuring a rose in full bloom, Pachter captures the center of the flower and depicts its alluring, outward expression in this fragrant piece. His characteristically bold, unmodulated colors flood the background of the canvas, maintaining his distinct graphic style in this otherwise supple composition. This piece serves as a striking example of Pachter's signature aesthetic, this time achieved through a fresh and entirely new subject. Pachter's work is represented in both public and private collections across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Portrait Gallery of Canada, The Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Pachter holds the prestigious position of Officer of the Order of Canada and is also a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal. "August Rose...
