Abraham Pether was born at Chichester, where he was a pupil of George Smith, one of the three brother landscape painters in the mid-18th century. He derived much of his early style from Smith, whose influence is discernible until the late 1790’s, but he also progressed his art by a careful observation of the romanticism of Richard Wilson RA..
He later travelled through the north of England and painted numerous views in Yorkshire. From at least 1784 he developed an increasing interest in the painting of crepuscular and night scenes, to the extent he was christened with the sobriquet “Moonlight Pether”. His son Sebastian (1790-1844) and grandson Henry (fl.1828-1865) continued the family tradition of nocturnal scenes, but neither approached him for quality of execution. His cousin was the distinguished engraver William Pether (1738-1821).

Abraham Pether
Like his near contemporary Joseph Wright (1734-1797), Abraham Pether was one of the finest early English landscape painters of chiaroscuro; the bold contrasting of light and shade used to convey drama and three-dimensional depth in a painting. Between 1773 and 1811 Abraham Pether exhibited at 61 paintings at the Royal Academy, 39 at the Free Society, 24 at the Society of Artists, and at the British Institution in London.

Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006
Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall.
His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33.
Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years.
In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful.
His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...
