About the Item
This exhibition highlights Adam Gunn’s latest work, consisting of oil paintings on wood panels. This recent body of work was inspired by three coinciding events in the artist’s life: his return to his home province of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, at the height of the Covid pandemic, obtaining his driver’s license, and his introduction to plein air painting by local artists. The artist traveled through his home province, painting on-site to capture the natural beauty and illustrate the diversity of Nova Scotia’s landscape (Project made possible through a grant from Arts Nova Scotia).
Adam Gunn is an artist (primarily a painter) currently based in Nova Scotia Canada. He has accumulated a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. He’s been the recipient of the Nancy Petry Foundation award, a two-timer semi-finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and the Nova Scotian winner in BMO’s 1st! Art Competition. He has received grants from Canada Council and the Nova Scotia Arts Council.

Adam Gunn
Adam Gunn's painting practice began with a desire to subvert the traditional still life genre, creating an absurd experience that would evoke a sense of uncertainty in the viewer. Initially, they painted from observed forms, exaggerating them and creating surreal compositions. However, their newer works incorporate a variety of sources, including imagination and organic processes to create indeterminate spaces and shapes. The artist is drawn to the unpredictable process that creates these forms and has begun painting in a more improvisational manner, balancing this with planning to emulate the process of natural evolution in their paintings. The artist received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and has been recognized for their works in various competitions, including being a finalist in the RBC Painting Competitions and a regional winner in the BMO 1st! Art competition. Originally from Nova Scotia, the artist currently resides in Montreal, pursuing graduate studies in art at Concordia University.

Greenfield-Sanders’ landscape paintings invite the viewer into nostalgia, to forge a connection to their own experience. Using found vintage photography as a starting point, she creates several iterations of each image, which she alters with pencil and watercolor, and finally paints over with oil. They emerge simultaneously familiar yet enigmatic. She elaborates, stating, “All of my paintings are based on amateur slides from seventy years ago. I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory.
Isca Greenfield-Sanders (b. in 1978 in New York City) received her dual BFA and BA degree from Brown University. The artist lives and works in New York, NY.
