About the Item

This exhibition highlights Adam Gunn’s latest work, consisting of oil paintings on wood panels. This recent body of work was inspired by three coinciding events in the artist’s life: his return to his home province of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, at the height of the Covid pandemic, obtaining his driver’s license, and his introduction to plein air painting by local artists. The artist traveled through his home province, painting on-site to capture the natural beauty and illustrate the diversity of Nova Scotia’s landscape (Project made possible through a grant from Arts Nova Scotia). Adam Gunn is an artist (primarily a painter) currently based in Nova Scotia Canada. He has accumulated a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. He’s been the recipient of the Nancy Petry Foundation award, a two-timer semi-finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and the Nova Scotian winner in BMO’s 1st! Art Competition. He has received grants from Canada Council and the Nova Scotia Arts Council.

Lake Cove
By Isca Greenfield-Sanders
Located in New York, NY
Isca Greenfield-Sanders Lake Cove, 2022 Mixed media oil on canvas 17 x 17 inches 43.2 x 43.2 cm Signed, dated, titled (verso) -- Greenfield-Sanders’ landscape paintings invite the viewer into nostalgia, to forge a connection to their own experience. Using found vintage photography as a starting point, she creates several iterations of each image, which she alters with pencil and watercolor, and finally paints over with oil. They emerge simultaneously familiar yet enigmatic. She elaborates, stating, “All of my paintings are based on amateur slides from seventy years ago. I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory. Isca Greenfield-Sanders (b. in 1978 in New York City) received her dual BFA and BA degree from Brown University. The artist lives and works in New York, NY. Recent solo exhibitions include “The Things I Can’t Forget,” Miles McEnery Gallery, New York, NY; “Ocean Eyes of Blue,” Michael Reid Gallery, Sydney, Australia; “Let’s Be Still,” Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, CA; “If I Could Go Back,” Baldwin Gallery, Aspen, CO; “You’re My Favorite Thing by Far,” Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden; “Today and Everyday,” Galerie Klüser, Munich, Germany; “Inherited Landscape,” Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, CA, among others.
