Beauty in simplicity. An elegantly composed and observed pair of late 19th, early 20th century drawings of Indian palm trees by the skilled hand of Alfred Crowdy Lovett.
Alfred Crowdy Lovett C.B.E (British, 1862-1919)
Alfred Crowdy Lovett joined the army as a lieutenant and aged 23 went to India where he served in Karachi, parts of Western India, Pune, Ahmednagar, Bombay and Nasirabad for ten years. During this time he rose through the ranks and in 1915 he was promoted to Colonel of the East Lancashire Reserve Division.
To date, as an artist Lovett has in the main been known for his military drawings. Many of his illustrations were published in the 1911 book The Armies of India, written by Major G F MacMunn. According to various sources the book made for a striking visual representation of the perceived power of empire at its peak as it marched towards the Delhi Coronation Durbar of King George the V.
During the first part of 2025, a significant number of Lovett’s paintings from his time in India have appeared in the London auction rooms. The paintings include many impressive images of cities, monuments and the peoples of India. They show Lovett’s fascination for the country he spent his formative years in and that he called home for over a decade.
Quietly beguiling, full of elegance and with a simple economy of line, these two drawings of palms also show Lovett’s accomplished artist hand and eye. It is often in depicting the simplest of subjects that great artists shine.
