Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork. Complemented by a Ben Badura Frame Illustrated in "New Hope for American Art" page 499 Signed lower right. Alice Sotter (1883 - 1968) Artist and stained glass window designer Alice Bennett was born in Pittsburgh. She began her art studies at the Pittsburgh School of Design for Women. She continued her studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology where she met and married fellow artist, George Sotter. She was also a student at the Brothers Stained Glass Window Studio with Horace Rudy, father of Bucks County sculptor, Charles Rudy. She and her husband came to the New Hope area about 1920 and remained permanently. The Sotters opened a stained glass studio in Holicong, Pennsylvania, a town five miles south of New Hope. Alice was active in the workings of the Sotter Studio. She was a member of the Phillips Mill Community Association and the Woodmere Art Museum. She exhibited in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and at the Phillips Mill near New Hope. Besides collaborating with her husband on stained glass window commissions, she painted landscapes of the area in and around New Hope, and floral still lifes. Illustrated in "New Hope for American Art" Harry Leith-Ross (1886 - 1973) The son of an English father and a Dutch mother, Harry Leith-Ross was born in the British Colony of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa. His first formal art instruction began in England under Stanhope Forbes, followed by studies with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris. Leith-Ross came to the United States to enroll at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1910, and then to Woodstock, in 1913. It was in Woodstock at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of Birge Harrison and John F. Carlson, that Leith-Ross would receive the training that most influenced his career as an artist. There he formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist, John Folinsbee. Sotter Oil on artist board 12 x 9 inches Born in Pittsburgh in 1879 to Nicholas and Katherine Sotter, George William Sotter painted the rivers and mills of that city in his early youth. He apprenticed with several stained-glass studios there prior to becoming a partner in the studio of Horace Rudy in Pittsburgh around 1901. He took leave from the studio and came to Bucks County in 1902, to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as with Edward W. Redfield, the premier painter of the New Hope School. In 1903, he participated in the annual exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He continued his studies at the Academy from 1905 – 1907 under William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz. George William Sotter lived in Holicong, Pennsylvania, near New Hope, in a converted 19th Century stone barn.
