About the Item

Alice R. Comins American, 1861-1943 The Valley, York Maine Oil on canvas 20 by 26 in. W/frame 27 by 33 in. Signed lower right and dated 1913 & titled on reverse A native of Gloucester, Massachusetts, the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John E. Johnston, she began her study of art during a girlhood spent there and in Boston and began also her collection of rare antiques, both of which were life-long interests.  She was a pupil of the artist Woodbury and exhibitions of her work have been held in Boston, in Maine, where for many years she has maintained a home at York Cliffs, and in Carmel, where she was an active member of the Carmel Art Association. She moved to Carmel, CA in 1918 and became active in the local art scene.  She appears to have divided her time between Boston and the Monterey Peninsula until her death on the latter on Dec. 28, 1943. Member: Carmel Art Association; National Association of Women Painters & Sculptors. Exhibitions: San Francisco Art Association, 1918; Oakland Art Gallery, 1932, 1934; Santa Cruz Art League, 1934.
