André Maire
Landscape with House in the Cote d'Or

1960

About the Item

'Landscape with House in the Cote d'Or', oil on board, by André Maire (1960). Semur-en-Auxois was the town in which Maire lived in the 1960s in the Cote d'Or region of Burgundy. He wondered into the nearby countryside to paint landscapes so different than those in Asia for which he is mostly known. This painting depicts a home along a narrow road with verdant hill and sky at dusk as backdrop. The considered treatment of the pink twilight as it reflects on the wall of the country house testifies to the deftness of the artist and accounts for the robust demand for his works of art. This painting has been recently restored and is in fair vintage condition. It is newly framed with linen slip and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner: 'André Maire'. Upon request a video of the artwork may be provided. About the Artist: André Maire (1898-1984), born in Paris in the Marais neighbourhood, became known as a “peintre-voyageur”. Maire began taking art instruction at the age of 12 at the Place des Vosges, and later at the Grand Chaumiere. During this time the artist Emile Bernard mentored him, and though he was likely to have been influenced by a number of painters, he truly was an individual in his style and subject matter. One could say that André Maire's creative work was primarily inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The dynamic development of pictorial art defined the first decades of the twentieth century. It was an era of experimentation and post-Impressionism, with artists first investigating Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different collectives and groups of artists across the globe evolved many ways of expressing these crucial innovations. Maire was an expressionist artist and a world traveler who created a loose, tropical style all his own. He traveled the world over, to exotic destinations like Madagascar, Egypt, Nigeria, Laos and Vietnam, and documented his travels with a pen and brush. This lifestyle started In 1917 when he was drafted into the French Army. He served in Indochina and while doing his military duty, also taught drawing at the French Lycée in Saigon. He made a number of trips to the temples of Angkor which he often painted. During his long life he also lived and painted in Italy, Egypt, India, Ceylon, and Africa, and is well known for his depictions of these far-flung places. Today, Maire’s work is housed in public and private collections worldwide, and are widely sought-after when they become available at the major auction houses. His artworks have realised prices in the tens of thousands of US Dollars. His work is found in the permanent collection of the Musée du Quai Branly, the Centre Georges Pompidou/Musée National d'Art Moderne, and the Musée Guimet in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, and the "Piscine" Modern Art Museum of Roubaix, amongst others.
