Andrée Karpelès (Paris, 1885 - Grasse, 1956) is an important figure in the promotion of contemporary Indian art on the French scene. A childhood spent between Calcutta and Paris opened the doors to India and gave her and her sister Suzanne, a future Indianist, a taste for South Asia. Suzanne Karpelès (1890-1968) focused more on Cambodia, entering the École française d'Extrême-Orient in 1922, before becoming curator of the Royal Library of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. Andrée Karpelès, for her part, embarked on an artistic career, focusing from the outset on depicting landscapes and scenes of Indian daily life. From 1906 onwards, she exhibited almost every year at the Salon national des beaux-arts, the Salon d'automne and the Salon des indépendants, where several of her works were acquired by the State. In 1908, at the Exposition industrielle internationale in Toulouse, she presented an oil on canvas entitled Sur la Terrasse. Indes, now in the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac. In 1910, she made a trip around India, which led to her first solo exhibition at the Galerie des Artistes modernes in Paris. From then on, she established herself on the French art scene as a keen observer and translator of India.
During her travels, she met the Tagore family in Calcutta and rubbed shoulders with members of the new Bengal School of painters, particularly Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951), the movement's leader. This Bengal School was formed in opposition to English colonial domination and the Western, academic art education provided by the government art schools set up by the British Raj in the 1850s. Her artists claimed to belong to Indian culture and advocated a return to traditional techniques and motifs. Andrée Karpelès' exchanges with the members of this new school, pioneers of modern Indian art, had a considerable influence on her artistic practice and her view of the country. She took a stand in their favor in 1914, on the occasion of the 22nd exhibition of French Orientalist Painters at the Grand Palais. Associated with the Indian Society of Oriental Art, she helped bring Bengal School artists to Paris for the first time, including the brothers Abanindranath and Gaganendranath (1867-1938) Tagore and Nandalal Bose (1882-1966).

Léopold Stevens was the son of Belgian-born painter Alfred Stevens (1823-1906), and was taught to paint by his father from an early age. He did not attend an art school.
In 1887, Léopold Stevens met the then-unknown Claude Debussy, befriended him and introduced him to his family, who received him on a regular basis.
He received a travel grant in 1892. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, winning a bronze medal in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle; at the 1902 Salon, he was given an entire room at the Grand Palais.
Gradually, Léopold Stevens specialized as a genre painter, executing portraits...
