19th Century

About the Item

Tonalist ancient cityscape painting by 19th century artist Andrew Melrose. Gorgeous oil painting of an ancient city on water with tones of orange, purple, green, and blue. Signed in lower left corner. Hung in an ornate gold frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 20 in. x W 30 in. Artist Biography: Born in 1836 in Selkirk, Scotland, Melrose emigrated to the United States in 1856, although there are few records of him prior to the Civil War. Primarily based in New Jersey, Andrew Melrose painted traditional, atmospheric landscapes inspired by travels in Europe, South America, and various regions of the United States. Many of his best paintings are views of New York State and New Jersey, especially regions of the Hudson River Valley and New York Harbor. Melrose typically painted in an indigenous American style of landscape painting, which may be characterized as romantic realism. He also worked with JMW Turner. Melrose passed away in 1901 New Jersey.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

  • Winter Scene
    By Walter Launt Palmer
    Located in New York, NY
In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
