What we’re looking at
A low, almost ruler-straight horizon bisects the canvas, anchoring a restless foreground of surf. Wakefield drives the eye laterally with a chain of wave-forms, then releases it upward into a sky of sweeping, cross-winds. The signature “ASW” sits quietly in the lower right.
Palette & light
Warm carmines, coral pinks, and ochres collide with teal and slate blues. Those knife-bright whites act like flash points catching last light. It reads as a liminal hour (sunset or first light): warm–cool tension is the emotional engine here.
Technique
This is classic Wakefield material handling: assertive impasto, dragged and lifted with a knife; wet-into-wet passages; and areas of scumbled pigment that let the ground breathe. Note the ridged, palette-knife seams in the surf and the broader, swept blends in the sky - two distinct “speeds” of mark to separate sea from air.
Structure & movement
• Horizon band: a calm counterweight to the turbulence below.
• Diagonal energy: repeated diagonals in the waves create forward motion; the sky counters with longer, slower diagonals, giving the piece a push-pull rhythm.

Wakefield’s great subject is transient light - city or coast, it’s the same cinema of the in-between. Here the sea is less topography than psychology: turbulence finding form, then dissolving. The warm overlays suggest memory; the cool underlayers feel like distance. Stand close and it’s pure gesture; step back and it resolves into weather, tide, and time.
