Jean-Baptiste-Armand Guillaumin was born in Paris on 16 February 1841. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Moulins, where Armand received his first schooling. In accordance with his father's wishes, he was sent to Paris to study business and placed under the care of his aunt and uncle. With the family's approval, he also attended drawing courses during this period. He worked for the Orléans Company, while continuing to paint and attending classes at the Académie Suisse where he met Cézanne and Pissarro. In 1868, he was still able to combine his work as a government official in the Ministry of Public Affairs with his painting. He took part in the first Impressionist Exhibition in 1874, showing three landscapes, among them Sunset in Ivry. The paintings he showed at subsequent Impressionist Exhibitions between 1877 and 1886 reveal his close links to the Impressionists.
Guillaumin discovered the town of La Creuse in 1887 and decided to settle there. In 1891, he won 100, 000 French francs in the lottery, a windfall that enabled him to devote himself exclusively to painting. From this point on, he made numerous visits to Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, Agay, Brittany, and the Auvergne. In 1904 he travelled to the Netherlands which inspired a number of paintings.
Armand Guillaumin's paintings are composed in strong, vivid colours, and his images of factory buildings, railway stations, and similar locations are imbued with a convincing atmosphere. His painting lost some of its intensity during his years in La Creuse, with greens and purples becoming more dominant in his palette.

Armand Guillaumin
Armand Guillaumin (1841–1927) was a French painter and a key figure in the Impressionist movement. Born in Paris, he initially worked as a draftsman and a colorist in the printing industry, which influenced his vibrant use of color in painting. Guillaumin became associated with the Impressionists in the 1870s, participating in several of their exhibitions. His work is characterized by bold brushstrokes and a focus on the effects of light and atmosphere, often depicting landscapes, urban scenes, and still lifes. Notably, he was one of the few Impressionists to achieve significant recognition during his lifetime, winning a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Guillaumin's style evolved over the years, incorporating elements of post-Impressionism and exploring more vivid color contrasts. His legacy is marked by his contributions to the development of modern art, influencing later artists with his innovative approach to color and composition. Today, his works are celebrated for their expressive quality and emotional depth.

Clayton-Liberatore Galleries, Bridgehampton, New York
Hayley Lever’s (1875-1958) versatility has worked against his posthumous reputation. He was never associated with a single artistic movement, instead producing impressionist, post-impressionist, and expressionist works. While best known as a painter of post-impressionist marine scenes, his subject matter included landscapes, urban scenes, and still lifes across his 60-year career. This lack of a singular style or subject has given him an amorphous place in U.S. art history despite his obvious accomplishments.
[Richard] Hayley Lever was born in Bowden, South Australia in 1875. He excelled in painting classes at Prince Alfred College (1883-91) and Norwood Art School (1891-93) in Adelaide. In the 1890s, Lever moved to England, studying art in London and painting at St. Ives, a fishing port and popular artistic colony on the Cornish coast. In St. Ives, Lever shared a studio with Frederick Waugh, and studied painting with Albert Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage.
Lever was a plein air painter particularly interested in the effect of sunlight on the sea. He painted in a distinctive style, strongly influenced by the works of Vincent van Gogh, that might now be called post-impressionism. He used a limited palette to paint the St. Ives harbor, particularly at dusk or in the moonlight. His strong contrasting colors and thick use of paint created a crisp and physical surface that earned him acclaim in Europe. Lever’s many St. Ives seascapes are among his most popular works. In 2017, his painting entitled “The Old Lighthouse and Fleets of St. Ives” sold at auction for $162,500.
In 1912, Lever moved to New York to test the art market in the United States. In Manhattan, Lever met prominent U.S. painters such as Ernest Lawson, Robert Henri, William Glackens, John Sloan, and George Bellows. Lever exhibited with this group regularly in New York City, painting parks, streets, bridges and the Manhattan waterfront. However, he soon discovered the scenic potential of Gloucester, Rockport, and Marblehead in the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts...

Maufra spent several years in England, notably in Liverpool, with his father, who wanted him to become a tradesman. He decided to take up painting instead and returned to France in 1883, attracting the attention of Octave Mirbeau in his very first exhibition, and subsequently being noticed by Frantz Jourdain in 1894 and Fontenais in 1901. In 1886, he successfully exhibited two seascapes at the Salon, following which he visited Brittany in 1890, making the acquaintance of Gauguin and Sérusier in Pont-Aven; he collaborated with them on the decoration of the Pouldu Inn in 1894. He maintained his acquaintance with the Nabis group artists Henry Moret and Gustave Loiseau. He travelled in l'Isère, Belgium, and Algeria (1913), as well as Paris, the Ile de France, Brittany and Normandy. From 1895, the Galerie Durand-Ruel assured the success of his work.
Maufra settled in Montmartre for about ten years during which he painted the old quarters of Paris, often around the church of St Séverin. He then turned to Brittany and Normandy for inspiration in keeping with a resolve to paint only from nature, his seascapes in particular finding favour. The influence of the Nabis on his work remains limited except in the 'synthetic' organisation of the composition. He was an admirer of Sisley and Pissarro, whose influence can be seen in his paintings. Maufra, like Valtat, went to some extent beyond Impressionism to become a forerunner of Fauvism in his use of colour.
An important retrospective exhibition of Maufra's work, prefaced by René Domergue, was organised in Paris around 1950. In 2001, his work was represented in the exhibition Painters and the Sarthe Region ( Les Peintres et la Sarthe) held at the Musée de la Reine Bérengère (for the 19th century) and the Abbaye de l'Épau (for the 20th century) at Le Mans. In 2003, his work appeared in the group exhibition Brittany, Land of Painters ( Bretagne, Terre des Peintres) at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Vannes.
