Charles Henry Miller (American, 1842-1922) Untitled, c. Late 1800s-Early 1900s Oil on board 9 x 12 in. Framed: 14 5/8 x 17 3/4 in. Signed lower right: C.H. Miller Charles Henry Miller was a noted artist and painter of landscapes from Long Island, New York. The American poet Bayard Taylor called him, "The artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island." Miller was educated at Mount Washington Collegiate Institute, and graduated in medicine at the New York Homeopathic Institute in 1864. Before his graduation, he had occasionally painted pictures, and in 1860 he exhibited The Challenge Accepted at the National Academy of Design, in New York City. He lived in Queens at the summer estate, Queenslawn, originally purchased by his parents. He went abroad in 1864 and again in 1867, and was a pupil in the Bavarian Royal Academy at Munich under the instruction of Adolf Lier. After the 1874 death of his father, Jacob Miller, who was a wealthy architect and builder, Miller received a large inheritance that allowed him to paint as an independent artist for the remainder of his long life. He worked seriously and exhibited regularly, including at international exhibitions. The majority of his oil paintings depict Long Island subjects, especially those in and around Queens Village. Fed up with the development of the eastern part of Queens (present-day Nassau County), he began to spend part of his summers in East Marion, Long Island, c. 1910. Here he spent his time sketching and painting the surrounding areas. In 1885 he published The Philosophy of Art in America, using the pseudonym Carl De Muldor (he was descended from the De Muldor family). His work was recognized: in 1873, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design and an academician in 1875. He served as president of the New York Art Club in 1879 and of the American Committee at the Munich International Exposition in 1883. Legacy and honors • In 1910 Miller founded the Queens Borough Allied Arts & Crafts Society. • A New York City public school, Queens P.S. 33, was once named for him. • 1878, gold medal awarded by the Massachusetts Charitable Association • 1885, gold medal at the World's Exposition in New Orleans. Sandor Bernath (1892-1984). Highland Lighthouse at Dusk, Truro MA. Watercolor on heavy wove paper, 17 x 17 inches; 18 x 18 inches framed. Excellent condition with no fading. Signed lower right. Silver leaf custom frame. Sandor Bernath was known for his stylized watercolors of sailing ships. He was a student of Edward Hopper. Born in Hungary on December 30, 1892, Bernath immigrated in his youth to the United States, and by the early 1920s had begun to establish himself within New York art circles. In January of 1922, he was given a one-man show at Mrs. Malcolm's Gallery on East 64th Street. Although little is known about Bernath's education and early training, this exhibition of nineteen watercolors included works, which suggest that by 1922, the artist had traveled and studied abroad. "Coast of Normandy" and "Shrine, Czechoslovakia" are two works the subjects of which certainly resulted from time spent in Europe. Other paintings exhibited in the 1922 show, such as "Brooklyn Bridge", "Weehawken Freight Yards" and "East River" reveal that on the whole, Bernath's earliest subjects remained those found in New York. After his show at Mrs. Malcolm's Gallery, Bernath became a member of the American Watercolor Society and later that year, showed six works at their annual exhibition. Unlike the works exhibited on East 63rd Street, the watercolors featured at the AWS show, such as "Grand Manan Coast" and "Fishing Boats", reflected a growing attraction to the subjects offered within the Maine landscape, an attraction which truly took hold in the summer of 1922. Like many of his peers, Bernath worked as a teacher and illustrator to support himself. In order to escape the tedium of these dreaded day-jobs, many retreated to the villages of Maine and Massachusetts where artists' communities such as those at Monhegan Island, Gloucester and Ogunquit had sprung from the modern artist's desire to study natural forms. Very fine original oil painting by the highly regarded Suffolk School artist, Edward Robert Smythe (1810-1899). The painting is signed to the lower left and is a very fine example of this important artists work. Painted in oils on canvas, the artist has captured a traveller resting beside her camp, with a small fire burning to the right and her horse standing to the left. With the frame, the painting measures 16 by 18 inches. The painting comes to us from a private collection of Suffolk School paintings, housed in Suffolk, England, where we understand it has resided for many years. Born at Berners Street, Ipswich in 1810, son of James Smyth (1780-1863) and his wife Sarah Harriet née Skitter; James, who was an accountant with the bank Bacon, Cobbold, Durningham & Cobbold in Tavern Street, Ipswich added a final 'e' to his surname. Edward attended the school of Robert Burcham Clamp and had a liking for a military career but his love of art took his fancy. Elected a member of the Ipswich Society of Professional and Amateur Artists on 1 March 1832 and attended his first meeting on 18 November the same year and was probably working under Henry Davy [q.v.] and where he met many local artist members. In his younger days he had a studio in the Old Shire Hall, Ipswich where he painted with such artists as Samuel Read [q.v.], Walter Hagreen [q.v.], Frederick Russel [q.v.] and Robert Burrows [q.v.]. About 1840 he moved to Norwich to study the Norwich School of painting where he became acquainted with Robert Ladbrooke’s son, Frederick [q.v.] and is said to have worked with John Sell Cotman [1782-1842] but returned to Ipswich some five years later, taking a house in Bramford Road. He married at Ipswich in 1848, Ellen Bowman of Ipswich and where his first child Edward Robert, jun. was born the following year. In 1851, giving his age as 32, is living at Elmswell, Suffolk with his 24 year old wife Ellen and son but later that year moved to 3 Angel Hill, Bury St Edmund’s, where he kept company with his friend Fred Ladbrooke. By 1861, still at Angel Hill, they had further children born at Bury St Edmund’s, Francis (Frank) Rowland 1852, Ellen Kate 1854 and Mary Emily 1856, their daughter Louisa Jane, died at Angel Hill, Bury St Edmund’s on 7 April 1861, aged 3 years and 7 months. He exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at the New Lecture Hall of the Mechanics' Institution, Ipswich in August 1850 several oil paintings including 'Chapel Viaduct, Colne Valley', 'A Group of Animals', 'A Sketch Ploughing', 'Ponies and a Dog' and 'A Landscape' and a watercolour 'The Ruling Passion strong in Death' and was also a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1886-1898. He also exhibited five works at the Royal Academey including 'View in the Colne Valley at Chappel, Essex' and exhibited five works at the British Institution including 'Pony and Boy' and 'The Village Blacksmith'. In 1865 Edward was living at 98 Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmund’s, and his wife died at 69 Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmund’s in 1879, aged 52. By 1891 he had moved in with his married daughter Ellen Kate, who had married at St Matthew’s church Ipswich on 10 May 1886, George Robert Chilvers, a tobacco manufacturer, at Burlington Lodge, 30 Burlington Road, Ipswich where he died on 5 July 1899, aged 88, and buried in Ipswich cemetery three days later.
