About the Item

Gouache painting on thick wove paper. The artist also made a lithograph of the same title and date (Fine/Looney 89). On verso: “Study for print” Late Departure” by Benton Spruance 1933 (with initials of artist’s widow Winifred Glover Spruance and estate stamp). Provenance: Hahn Gallery, Philadelphia Private collection, Boston, acquired from above in 1982 Private collection, New York Spruance utilized the same composition for his lithograph and painting of the same title, Late Departure, a view of the 1882 Gravers train station in northern Philadelphia. He adopted his distinctive vibrant palette to create exaggerated and simplified rhythmic forms. Spruance paintings from his most important period of the 1930s almost never appear on the market.
