Brett Eric Osborn was born in Lima, Ohio in 1963. Both his father and his cousin are artists and influenced the young Osborn during his formative years. Brett recalls being a child during a "Friday-night-smoked-filled-room-critique" where his father and friends would meet to look at slides of contemporary artists and their work. His father worked as a painter and a designer. His father's familiar designs included the "Grey Hound Bus" logo and the "Circle K" logos. Brett studied painting, film and theater at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He supported himself working in professional theater as a set builder, in television as an art director and after moving to Southern California in 1987, worked in Hollywood as a special effects miniature artist. French school after 1890 The Knight's Farewell Oil on canvas 124 x 64 cm Not signed A very beautiful painting, romantic and very decorative, both monumental in its composition and touching in its subject, especially since it stands out in a tight frame. The knight's farewell to his beloved is represented on a background marked by naturalism with its meadow, its flowers, its wood, its river and its very beautiful colors. The painting is of the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, and he is certainly French as indicated by the mtamp of the canvas merchant on the back of the canvas (the Jules Chauvin house which was active at 33 rue du Dragon in Paris between 1895 and 1937). The style of our painting is romantic, even picturesque. The knight carries the "Reichsadler", the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the lady a satchel with various signs including bear paw prints. The style is naturalistic and reminds of the English painters of the 1890s inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau with religious and medieval themes and it is very close to nature with their settings of meadow, flowers and woods. The English art historian John Christian spoke of the last English Romantics in relation to these painters of the end of the century, Burne-Jones, Stanley Spencer or John William Waterhouse. Those motifs are also found here, of the meadow, flowers, wood and river that we often see in Waterhouse's art in particular.
