About the Item
Idyllic forest scene by Brother Cornelius (Herman Braeg) (Swiss, 1877-1962), 1931. Golden autumn light passing through the trees and illuminating the yellow leaves is captured beautifully with loose, painterly impressionist brushstrokes in this gorgeous early 1930's landscape.
Initialed and dated "B. F. C. 31" in the lower right corner (partially obscured by frame).
Tag on verso from the 1946-47 Society for Sanity in Art Annual Show.

Brother Fidelius Cornelius (Herman Braeg) (Swiss, 1877-1962) was born in Emmishofen, Switzerland on May 3, 1877. Brother Cornelius (Hermann Emanuel Braeg) immigrated to Philadelphia in 1883.
After becoming a member of the Christian Brothers, he moved to California in 1906 and became an art teacher at St Mary's College, a position he was to hold for the rest of his life.
He studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute, California College of Arts and Crafts, and University of California, Berkeley (M.A. in 1921).
He is best known as the author of two volumes on the life of William Keith entitled, Keith, Old Master of California (1942).
Brother Cornelius died in an automobile accident near Placerville, CA on Jan. 29, 1962.
