About the Item

When one looks at the paintings of Bruno Zupan, what one encounters is Beauty. Whether the results of having grown up in the war-ravaged country of Slovenia in the early ‘40’s or having endured the life of a “starving artist,” Bruno Zupan has discovered the joy of seeing beauty in life, and it is this joy with which he imbues each of his paintings. Zupan was born n Slovenia on June 21, 1939, just a few years before the unfortunate loss of his father. Raised as an only child, surrounded by women, Zupan owes much of his success to the wisdom of his grandmother whose attempt to calm her spry, young grandson with a set of watercolors served as a catalyst for what would become a lifelong pursuit. For Bruno Zupan, the success of being one of today’s most revered contemporary impressionist painters is the result of sacrifices made in order to follow his heart. A young man with little money, Zupan headed off to France where he devoted himself to capturing the outdoor beauty of Paris. Subsisting on bread and jam sandwiched, his talent attracted the attention of passers-by; he attracted the attention of a young art lover from Columbus, Georgia, Jane Ritchie, who he married in 1964. Zupan’s growing popularity began to produce an interest in and demand for his work, which resulted in early exhibitions at the Columbus Museum in Georgia and the IFA Gallery in Washington, D.C. As their lives began to change with a hint of success and the birth of their daughter, Natsha, the Zupans returned to Paris; however, France was expensive, and money was tight. The financial constraints of life in Paris resulted in the Zupan’s eventual move to the picturesque Spanish town of Valdemossa on the island of Mallorca, which since has served as the subject of some of Zupan’s most beautiful paintings. Zupan’s inspiration comes from spending his life in pursuit of light. His year is divided among a 5-month stay in Mallorca, 1 month in Paris and 2 months in Venice. Picturesque vistas, the haphazard growth of flowers along stucco walls or well-worn footpaths, and the golden tones of sunset on Venetian architecture all owe their inspiration to Zupan’s observance of light and recognition of the varied, yet simple, manifestations of beauty. Since Zupan’s recognition and success have grown, he and Jane have organized and attended more than 150 one-man exhibition in 40 cities on 3 continents. He is currently featured in some of the world’s most prestigious public collections: The Library of Congress, Washington D.C., The United Nations Headquarters, New York, and the Museum of Mallorca, to name a few. Additionally, Zupan’s work is part of such prestigious private collections as the Rockefellers, the Swarovski family of Austria, Li Ziannian, President f the People’s Republic of China, HRH Princess Grace of Monaco, Bruno Magli,, and Tom Brokaw, among others.
