About the Item

‘Delta Morning’ is an abstract Impressionist lacquer on wood painting created by Vietnamese Bui Huu Hung in 2008. Featuring a delicate tonality made of red, gold and black colors, the painting touches our heart with its deep sense of serenity and subtle hint of nostalgia. A large grouping of tall bamboo trees seems to be creating a protective curtain, discreetly interrupted by a sinuous path leading towards an unknown destination. The darkened sky above gives a sense of subtle melancholy to the ensemble. The two small characters in the front, whose steps are leading them to the woods and who are protected by traditional umbrellas, draw us in as we start to care about their destination. With its large square proportions and muted colors, this 2008 abstract Impressionist Vietnamese landscape lacquer on wood painting will bring a thoughtful touch to any home, whether placed above a sofa, bed, enfilade or console table. Unframed, the painting is signed on the right side. Bui Huu Hung was born in Hanoi in 1957. He graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1975 and began his study of traditional lacquer techniques after graduation. Hung’s works are varied but center around a common theme of recollection. He believes that new events, impressions and knowledge are built upon life’s historical foundations. He strives to preserve the past by blending it with present day elements so that “it does not become reduced to lifeless words without visual detail”. Hung uses powerful color themes of blue, gold, red and green in the tradition of East Asian lacquer paintings born of the past. The layers of transparent colored lacquer are placed atop one another to create extremely robust and lively paintings. Hung’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. His works are in the permanent collections of the Orient Museum of Russia, the Singapore Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum in Melbourne. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, Bui Huu Hung’s nostalgic paintings tell a hundred stories.” Heritage Magazine, August 1998.
