Carl Grauer
Forsythia Blooming (Abstracted Realist Landscape Painting of Residential Home)

2021

About the Item

Abstracted realist gridded landscape showing the change of seasons with a blooming yellow forsythia bush in front of the artist's home "Forsythia Blooming" by Hudson Valley based artist, Carl Grauer Oil on canvas 60 x 48 inches, 61 x 49 x 3 inches with a white painted wood floater frame Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang Carl Grauer explores spatio-temporal themes in a new body of work started in the autumn of 2020. Like so many of us on lock down riding out the surges of the pandemic, Grauer retreated to nature near his home and studio in Poughkeepsie, NY. He used this time to slow down and mindfully observe the “minutia of leaves, moving clouds, and the time of day giving up its fight for the night”. Describing a new series of landscapes organized by a grid structure, the artist explains “I paint a perspective that tracks change, point of view, and these fourth-dimensional observations on a two-dimensional surface with oils.” Here the artist captures a blooming forsythia bush in front of his home. Each 12 x 12 inch square was painted during March to July of 2021, as he observed the flowers and leaves blooming. A bright pink underpainting was used to make the vibrant colors pop in the foreground, elements of which can be seen coming through the white snow, sky, and edges of the painting. A rainbow pride flag waves proudly on the artist's porch, accenting the saturated hues of the yellow forsythia against the vivid blue sky and green painted façade. This painting is complemented with a slim, white painted wood frame and is ready to hang. Artist Statement: During the past year there was a need to be in nature, to search for a small touch of a real experience. I found solace in stepping into nature, taking walks, breathing the air and observing with a slowness and mindfulness that comes during times of meditation. And from those moments, I dove into my intrigue with the daily change of a season, the minutia of leaves, moving clouds and the time of day giving up its fight for the night. Using an organized grid as a structure, I paint a perspective that tracks change, point of view and these fourth-dimensional observations on a two-dimensional surface with oils. Here are some works that explore my response to this time and being in the natural world. • The Orange Wall of San Miguel #2
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has recently appeared at the West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; the Rose Cafe, Venice; Topanga Canyon Art...

  • Confronted Solitude - Park Schöntal 2
    By Kyoung Mi Lee
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful, quiet and deeply contemplative piece from a Korean artist based in America, Kyoung Mi Lee (Lee Kyoungmi) The oil painting is on a specially constructed 3D birch wood panel to create a sensory visual effect, almost like looking through the looking glass. The centerpiece of the painting depicts a beautiful little park in Germany, near her home in Germany where Kyoung Mi lived for a spell. Due to work, Kyoung Mi has lived in various countries and whilst she loved her new homes, there is a sense of displacement and not belonging. This perhaps reflects the truth for many of us who travel and live in different places, moving away from home for work, love or simply to seek a new or different life. As such, the Greek torso...
