Carole Garland
Lemon Drops

2022

About the Item

The lemons in this painting play hide and seek with the viewer as artist Carole Garland explores the mysteries of light and shadow. Myriad shades of green, from cold blue emerald to the warm lime color of radiant green mix and match in this colorful tapestry. Garland begins slowly, applying thin layers of underpainting, builds using several coats of paint with loaded brushes and finishes with a palette knife flourish of impasto, like frosting on a cake. The result is a sculptural work in which the textures of the leaves and the skin of the lemons are lifted off the canvas. The wood sides of this panel may serve as a frame. Carole Garland was a student of art at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois; the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. She has been influenced by contemporary artists Frank Serrano, Jeff Horn, Calvin Liang and David Gallup. Her work is in collections in Southern California and throughout the U.S.

  • The Orange Wall of San Miguel #2
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has recently appeared at the West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; the Rose Cafe, Venice; Topanga Canyon Art...

  • Venice Beach
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy. To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with artists Keith Finch and Ron Pekar, taken numerous workshops and was mentored by David Gallup...

  • Rock On
    By Carole Garland

The movement of water, the changing reflections, leaves floating across the surface, the angle of golden light... The artist Carole Garland conveys the childlike wonder and awe she feels as she gazes down at a stream in the woods. The rocks are solid and still as the light begins to fade and different shadows appear. Garland attempts to interpret in her work the calm and serenity evoked by nature. There is a spiritual aspect to her embrace of the natural world. Workshops with Plein Air oil painters Frank...
