Cesare Maggi
Landscape with River Glimpse, 1906

1906

About the Item

Oil on Canvas. Signed in lower left hand corner. The Roman-born artist Caesar Maggi established himself as a Divisionist landscape painter, depicting Engadine and Aosta Valley alpine landscapes, often enlivened by the inclusion of figures and animals. He became friends with the painter Giacomo Grosso in Turin in 1901, and then turned to the successfully toward the portrait genre, setting aside the Divisionist technique. While still favoring high mountain views, he broadened his subjects by also engaging in seascapes and still lifes. In this work, still from the early period, Maggi depicts a glimpse of countryside crossed by a calm river, bordered by rows of bare trees and small grassy reliefs, behind which the cottages stand: already no longer bound to the from the pointillist techniques, the work is characterized rather by dense and opaque color mixtures, in which overlapping land, water the cottages in a continuum broken only by the band of sky above. The work is presented in a styled frame.

Paesaggio con Figure, 1700s
By Antonio Francesco Peruzzini 1
Located in Milan, IT
