Port View with Figures and a Turk, Late 18th - 19th Century Follower of the French school of the second half of the 18th century Medium: Oil on canvas Frame: Early 19th-century carved wooden frame, in good condition Dimensions: - With frame: Height 82 cm x Width 87 cm - Without frame: Height 52 cm x Width 69 cm This painting depicts an imaginary port, inspired by the idealized marine landscapes of Claude-Joseph Vernet and Charles-François Lacroix de Marseille, characteristic of the second half of the 18th century. The rosy glow of the sunset envelops the scene, creating a vibrant and suspended atmosphere. At the center, a Turk wearing a white turban and red mantle is engaged in conversation with two elegantly dressed ladies seated near the shore. Their gestures and posture suggest an intense exchange, leaving room for layered narrative interpretations. On the left, a decorative small boat, likely a "lanzino" or a ceremonial gondola, is ready to depart. These types of boats, featuring decorative coverings like the visible canopy, were used to transport passengers from larger ships anchored offshore to the coast or for ceremonial movements.
