Architectural whimsy with Roman ruins, column and ancient arches.

About the Item

Architectural whimsy with Roman ruins, column and ancient arches. Year 1718. Oil on Canvas. Original canvas. Roman school of the early 18th century. The painting is part of the series of 3 paintings of the same size and subject, which we offer for sale separately. One of the paintings is signed Giuseppe Longhi, dated 1718. A painter unknown to scholars, he becomes a minor discovery that lifts the curtain on painters of the imaginative architecture of the Roman school before Panini. This painting is unsigned. In the painting we see depicted in ruins a building from Roman times, with arches made of large stone blocks, a fluted column on the left. At the bottom is an Italian landscape with cypress trees. While in the foreground two peasants-man with basket of vegetables kneels before the woman with white headdress, suggesting a woman from Ciociaria. Next to the couple-a small dog: didactic allusion to fidelity. The painting has been restored, has some signs of time and retouches ( see photos)

Moses Strikes Water from the Rock Dutch school, XVII century. Workshop of Jacob de Wet (Haarlem, 1610-1675). Technique: Oil on oak wood panel, composed of 3 horizontal panels. In this evocative work, Moses stands in a cave, gathering the Israelites. There was no water to drink or for their cattle. The people were discontented in the desert. But Moses and Aaron listened to the voice of God. With Aaron’s staff, Moses struck the rock, and water gushed forth abundantly, quenching their thirst. Jacob de Wet’s workshop specializes in subjects from the Old and New Testaments. The recognizable rectangular format, simple compositions, and clear narratives define his style. The interplay of light and shadow, reminiscent of Rembrandt, adds timeless allure. The characters’ costumes, with their large hats and turbans...
