THE ARTIST:
Born in Corsica in 1920, Charles Levier was an influential modern artist known for his stylized depictions of still lifes, figurative compositions, harbor scenes, and especially cityscapes. After training at L'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Levier served during World War II before reestablishing his artistic career in both France and the United States.
Inspired by the geometric abstraction of Georges Braque and the chromatic sensibilities of Pablo Picasso, Levier developed a uniquely modern style characterized by strong black contours, flattened perspective, and vivid color blocking. His work reflects the influence of Cubism and midcentury design aesthetics.
Levier’s collectors included cultural icons such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Jackie Kennedy, and Peter Lawford, and his work has been featured in major exhibitions on both continents. Today, his paintings remain in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Menton Museum, and museums in Seattle, San Diego, and Atlanta.

Charles Levier
Charles Levier was born on January 26, 1920, in Corsica. He was the son of a French father and an American mother. He held a fascination with color and form that led him, at age 17, to the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris for private studies. World War II came along and Levier served in the French Army in North Africa, later becoming Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. Paintings by Levier can be found in countless private and public collections. Among those collectors are Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Prince and Princess Poniatowski, Mrs. Dan Topping, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Martin and many others. Levier died in 2003.
