ARTIST: Charles Walter Harvey (1895-1970) British
TITLE: "Trees"
SIGNED: lower middle

CONDITION: very good
DETAIL: Harvey was born in London and his family moved to Belfast in 1906. Studied at the Belfast School of Art and won a gold medal in the national competiion for design. He attended the Metropolitan School Of Art Dublin from 1932-1960. He taught at St Marys Training College Belfast and retired as Head Of The Art Department. He often exhibited in the Ulster Arts Club. His landscape painting was generally of Ireland: Connemara, Donegal and COunty Down. In 1976 a retrospective exhibition was held at the Arts Council Gallery.

DETAIL: Painter, stained glass artist and illustrator, born in Cowbridge, Glamorgan. Was married in 1906 to the artist Gertrude Alice Meredith Williams, who died in 1934. He studied at Slade School of Fine Art and in Italy and France. During World War I he served in the Army in France and completed work based on his Somme front experiences. Work by Williams and his wife is at the Scottish National War Museum in Edinburgh. He painted widely in France and showed in Liverpool and elsewhere, sometimes signing as M M Williams.
