Some paintings come to the edge of realism, while others feature willfully invented patterns, intersections, and overlaps. “I often find myself in a struggle between abstraction and representation," says Chris Liberti. “I don’t want to lock myself into being one or the other. Working abstractly is freeing since there is more looking involved: more than simply looking at what was being painted.”

John Hartell taught two disciplines at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York: freshman architecture and graduate painting. He was a much-loved professor there from 1930 until his retirement in 1967; one of his most illustrious students is the architect Richard Meier.
