"Although the imposing Diaolou are now largely abandoned, that is not the case with the intensively cultivated fields surrounding them. Former villagers still travel to reconnect with their past as they toil and tend to the varied plantings.

Exhibition Description
The rapid transformation of Southern China’s Guangzhou province from an agricultural region into a global leader for international trade has truly created a feast for the eyes, juxtaposing charming Chinese houseboats floating along the Pearl River Delta against a backdrop of imposing skyscraperThe expeditious changes that have occurred since the 1980s have caught, in particular, the attention of artists who once lived in the region – some while training at the prestigious Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. They now find themselves fondly reminiscing about the pristine countryside that they used to explore. In recent years, these Chinese artists, who now call California home, have traveled back to their native land to capture in artwork glimpses of both the past and the continually evolving present of this sprawling port city that has embraced Western influences.
Accompanying the Chinese-American artists on these plein air painting expeditions have been their American counterparts, many of whom had never visited China – let alone painted in the world’s most populous country. This exhibition features more than 40 paintings that resulted from these trips, revealing a range of fascinating perspectives on life in China’s third largest city.

Chuck Kovacic
After acquiring a BFA in graphic design with a minor in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Chuck art directed campaigns for a variety of print and media clients and detailed urban revitalization programs for communities participating in the "Main Street" program sponsored by the National Trust For Historic Preservation.
Upon relocating to Southern California, he focused his artistic skills as a restoration expert specializing in early merchandising ephemera and related antiques. His disparate interests contributed to his creation of 221b BAKER STREET/Los Angeles, a full-scale recreation of the sitting room of the famed detective, Sherlock Holmes. As a performer/emcee, he has staged presentations for numerous Fortune 500 companies and hosted the California Art Club's revived lecture series. His paintings investigate a variety of subjects rendered in the "plein air" style of the post- Impressionists. Chuck is an Honor Court member of the Mid-Valley Art League and in 2017 was named to Signature status in the California Art Club. In 2016 he was the recipient of the CAC's "William and Julia Bracken Wendt Award." He is a frequent exhibitor at the CAC's annual Gold Medal show as well as their Old Mill Gallery in San Marino. Chuck has participated in invitational art programs in China, Provence, Switzerland and Scotland, as well as "plein air" events in Alameda, San Luis Obispo, Mendocino, San Dimas, Sonoma and Ohio.

“This is part of my series, ‘Disappearing San Onofre.’ While down at San Onofre painting, I saw a boy teaching himself to surf. I noticed him come in after one too many mouthfuls of salt water. He took the time to wash the sand and seaweed off his board, but he was too tired to put away his board. He just sat down. Rather than trying to cover his crumpled pride through cussing and expletives, he sat, looked, and recovered, measuring his experience. It was heart lifting, in what looked to be defeat, he was not defeated, only disappointed—knowing he will try again. I could only smile. This kid had a rare kind of victory.”
