A truly amazing 19th Century landscape painting by renowned British landscape painter Clarence Roe (United Kingdom, 1850-1909). Is a very large oil on canvas landscape with lake scene and mountain range in background. Signed lower left, CLARENCE ROE. Also has G. Rowney & Co. artists’ supplier’s stencil on back of canvas. Gold composition frame, likely original, with gadrooning, berry and laurel leaf decoration. Dimensions: Sight: 29 1/2″ H x 49 1/2″ W, frame: 39″ H x 58″ W. Clarence Roe was an acclaimed British landscape painter. Born in Glasgow he was a pupil of the Royal Academy in London. Clarence Roe’s landscapes are wonderfully versatile often including rivers, lakes, lochs, mountains, fishermen, birds and animals. Henry Roe is best known for his renderings of the Scottish Highlands and lochs. He was the son of Robert Henry Roe, also a landscape artist and Emma Bailey, the daughter of the sculptor of Nelson’s column. His two brothers, Colin Graeme and Robert Ernest, were also listed artists. Some Dictionaries state that Clarence was born in Glasgow and some that he was born in Birmingham. He is also given an address in London at Tottenham Court Road, although Professor Dennis Child, in his book Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales states that he spent most of his time living a Bohemian life in his studio in Yorkshire Like many other landscape painters, Clarence Roe used plein air studies of natural elements, such as a craggy boulder– to create idealized compositions. Roe’s rich color choices and precise brushwork reinforce the harmony between these works. His works often appear in Hislop’s Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle. Clarence Henry Roe is listed in the Dictionary of British Art, Volume IV: Victorian Painters (Wood, 1995), The Dictionary of British Artists, 1880-1940 (Johnson and Greutzner, 1980) and Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (Benezit,1999). Roe painted mainly in oil. He exhibited at The Royal Hibernian Academy on 2 occasions. His address was thought to be 9 South Crescent, Tottenham Court Road, London.
