About

Claude Joseph Vernet (French 1714-1789) was born in Avignon where he trained with his father Antoine and he became the leading French landscape painter of the later part of the 18th century. Vernet achieved great celebrity with his serene landscapes and topographical paintings. He was also one of the century’s most accomplished painters of tempests and moonlight scenes. Vernet became a member of the Academy on his return to France where also undertook royal commissions for decorative panels on ceremonial coaches. This painting could possibly be a study or such a panel as there appears to be a wax seal, possibly royal, verso. Framed Size: H 39 cm x W 47 cm Image Size: H 20.5 cm x W 27.5 cm
