Clayton Anderson
Small Surrealist Landscape with Boats - After the Flood

circa 1970s

About the Item

Detailed surrealist landscape depicting a barren, desert-like scene with small boats by Clayton Anderson (American, b. 1943). Signed "CLAY ANDERSON" on verso. Unframed, but mounted on a birds eye maple box and ready to be displayed as is. Image size: 8.6"H x 8.6"W. Clayton Anderson (American, b. 1943) studied at the Pennsylvania Academny of the Fine Arts and worked with Ben Kimihira, Waltler Stuempfig, and Hobson Pittman. He is a surrealist painter and a member of the California Visionary Artists Group. Artist’s statement; "Over the years my Geminian nature has led me to develop a number of visually distinctive painting styles. Although the stylistic elements in my art have varied, there has been a unifying factor consistently running through my paintings which reflects a deep love for the unique, spiritual alchemy that arises from the combination of Beauty and Mystery. Since my childhood I've been strongly attracted to creative works which possessed this combination, and I've searched for its unique, potent presence through the vehicle of my art. When Mystery refuses to fully reveal its secrets, the thinking mind temporarily gives up and, for a moment, is quiet. When Beauty is observed the heart expands and presents awareness with an exquisite energy. The combination of a quiet mind and an expanded heart offers the opportunity for an extremely rich human experience, one for which I look daily in my Art and in my Life."

Volcano Eruption - Explosive Fire Lava Flow from Hell
By Peter Ellenshaw
Located in Miami, FL
A Fiery Hell is depicted as a volcano that spews flames and lava dust into the air. According to the Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw Family Archive, this work was shown to Stanly Kubrick for a Paradise Lost, movie concept. Peter had created matte paintings for Kubrick's Spartacus in 1960 and they continued their professional friendship for years to come. Peter did some collaboration with TRON in 1982. Unfortunately, the movie concept for John Miltons, Paradise Lost, was not brought into production. An erupting volcano is also an powerful metaphor for many human conditions. Ellenshaw (1913–2007) was a highly regarded matte painter and special-effects creator whose filmography includes Old Yeller (1957), Swiss Family Robinson...

The Petrified Origin oil on canvas painting Antoni Pitxot
By Antoni Pitxot
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: The Petrified Origin Artist: Antoni Pitxot i Soler (1934–2015) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 25.6 x 31.9 in (65 x 81 cm) Date: 1967 Condition: Unframed Signature: Signed lower right: Pitxot Provenance: Private collection Notes: Early work from Pitxot’s mature period, featuring the symbolic and meticulously rendered stone forms that would define his artistic identity. 📝 Work Description In The Petrified Origin, Antoni Pitxot presents a haunting and timeless vision of a single, eroded rock suspended in a dreamlike, undefined space. The stone, modeled with sculptural precision, appears to float over a subtly reflective surface, devoid of background or narrative context. Its porous texture, cracks, and shadows evoke a fossilized memory — a silent relic of geological time. Painted in 1967, this piece exemplifies Pitxot's unique visual language, developed through his practice of collecting stones along the Costa Brava and transforming them into anthropomorphic and symbolic compositions. The result is both surreal and solemn, an ode to nature’s memory and the enduring presence of the inanimate. 👤 About the Artist Antoni Pitxot i Soler (born in Figueres, 1934 – died in Barcelona, 2015) was a Catalan painter deeply rooted in the surrealist tradition. Coming from an artistic family —his uncle was Ramon Pichot, a friend of Picasso and Dalí— Pitxot trained as a draughtsman and painter from a young age. In the 1960s, he settled in Cadaqués, where he developed his distinct artistic universe. His paintings revolve around stone as a symbol of permanence, transformation, and memory. Pitxot created sculptural assemblages from real coastal stones and later immortalized them in oil on canvas. His works often hint at human figures, ancient myths, and allegories of time. 🎭 Connection with Salvador Dalí Pitxot was not only a close friend of Salvador Dalí but also one of his closest collaborators. Dalí admired his work and invited him to co-design the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. After Dalí’s death...
